Tempting fate here I know but I was wondering those of you that have had there engine go down the tubes how did it let go...Spectacuarly or were you able to drive it before discovering the worst?

You see I am expecting this to happen at some stage but am curious...its like knowing how you are going to die!

1st one when up like a formula one car with all the smoke out of the back (car still worked)
2nd one just made a loud tapping noise, still drove ok but cam shaft had gone.
3rd one was strange, we were going up to the factory and got there with no problem, either Paul or Heath drove my car and said something was wrong, they investigated it and found out it was only running on 5 cylinders, it would still spin the wheels in 2nd.

You need to try and get hold of a copy of the 2006 Furball DVD. PHer Z8Cookies Tuscan is diarised on there and goes from running sweetly at the beginning of the trip, through all the noise to finally blowing and being recovered - all caught on film.

Mine had "electrical failure" according to the garage when I spoke to the technician. His boss then laughed and said I had stuck a conrod through the alternator (somehow I was not comforted).

No warnings, just a bang!

slight ticking noise, like a sewing machine, burning a fair bit of oil, drove fine though, it turned out a cylinder liner had slipped and valve guides worn out

Burning lots of oil is definitely a warning sign. I remember on my first Tuscan going through about a litre every 150 miles or so just prior to its second rebuild.

The first time was totally unexpected - had been out for a drive (quite brisk), then slowed down & pootled through a town for about 10 minutes, and all of a sudden lost power, got lots of loud clattering & pulled over.

Yes I think so, or it could do with doggy parts sourced from abroad on the cheap, anyway it didn't cost me anything to get it sorted.
