Have noticed reverse gear and first gear are getting tougher to engage. Any ideas?

Dragging clutch, maybe? Is it just when cold?

Possibly the thrust bearing or slave cylinder, had exactly that on mine, have now changed complete clutch and also the slave cylinder. When I get the body back on I'll let you know if it works smile

Is there a preference to the brand and quality of the fluid?

Only clutch/brake fluid available from the garage was Dot 4, it says it mixes safely with Dot,3,4,and 5.1. Is this teh correct stuff to use?

I wouldn't worry too much about Dot ratings for clutch fluid - not quite the same rate of heat transfer as a brake caliper!

As long as you don't mix mineral and synthetic (Dot 5 I think) it'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice, topped up the master cylinder and smooth as, only took a tiny amount to fill back up. I sit possible that the heat from the engine would casue this to evaporate off and hence I have had loss of fluid. I have checked for leaks, and would notice any from under the car on teh garage floor, but none...

I don't think that brake fluid should evaporate, especially if the reservoir cap is on, and certainly not at any noticeable rate.

Check in the footwell... they often leak around the actuator rod so you may find traces of fluid there.
