It seems to never end.

I just got called from the shop working on my "new" G20. It seems the hacks who installed the Quaife LSD butchered the job. It was installed completely wrong and has been destroyed. In addition to the innards, one of the toothed adjusting sleeves for bearings just inside the half shaft mounting point has had the teeth completely sheared off... no doubt attributing to the premature death of the innards.

So - now I'm not only looking for rear brake calipers (or preferably rebuild kits), but also all of the necessary bearings, crush sleeves, and these adjusting sleeves to put the diff right again. I thankfully have the original Sierra diff in good shape.

Any leads out there? And I will try to post pics if I can figure it out.

Thanks again,

Aaron

Hi, I can understand the crown wheel, pinion and bearings being wrecked but quaife diffs are pretty tough internally. Unless there wasn't any oil in it its definately worth stripping the diff unit fully before condemning it . They aren't too hard to pull apart, Dave

Hi Dave -

So I've been told, but I went to see it. Not pretty... This job was done incorrectly on every level. Three of the seals leak, and leaked out apparently enough fluid to contribute to the destruction. Th shop believes the install was done and not adjusted correctly do that the gears were all staged at their terminal ends. Every thing has been ground down outside of salvageable use. :-( As an indication of just HOW bad a job this was, it was just done on August 18th!

Any part sourcing advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again,

Aaron

For bearings and seals try burtons , www.burtonpower.com , never the cheapest but they carry stock. Did have a quick look to find similar platform as our sierra over there but apart from a few imported specials didn't get further than the Merkur and the even rarer (for you)Scorpio so would guess any bits will be hard to find.
Still worth stripping the diff out , it may be full of swarf but because of how it works there is still a good chance it is useable. Burtons sell Quaife if it really is scrap , and brake calipers too ! hth , Dave

I'll make sure to get the old parts from the shop.

I'll create a second post, but for us Yanks I found B.A.T. British American Transfer out of Florida who seems to have almost all the parts I need (Thank GOD!).

Thanks again!

So much for that... B.A.T. cannot source any of the parts I need any longer.

To that end. Any thoughts on the reliability of a used rear end?

Thanks,

Aaron

As an update...

I got a used (50K miles) differential out of a '88 XR4Ti (paid $200). Looks good. SHOULD be plug and play. Shop is going to drain and fill as a safety, install, and then rebuild the rear brake calipers.

I got clarity on the Quaife. It is just the ring and pinion that are questionable. As a novice, they look usable, but according to the mechanic the wear patterns would cause noise. He was also quick to point out that a new ring and pinion (4.11) and it's ready to roll. I may very well be in the selling market of this "AS IS" so I'd entertain offers.

Thanks all,
