alfa 156 t spark oil leak problem need help!

Hi , my other half has the above alfa and when she got home from school run i noticed an oil patch on floor , so i presumed it was a gasket or seal somewhere, we took it to our garage we use so they could look at it & give us a price for repair so when we phoned them up in the afternoon they told me that they had spent all morning trying to find the leak and eventually at the bottom of the enginge (presumable under the sump) they found the leak but had no idea what the part was so they phoned the alfa dealer closest & described the part to them and they told them it was called a VALVE and would cost £186 plus vat just for part is there anyone on here know what this "valve" is and shed some light on this part for me please.

£186 is a lot for a "valve" even at Alfa prices! Perhaps the heat exchanger????

Do the 156's have a thermostat for the oil cooler like the 155's? could be that.
