Hello All,

after a bit of advice on chip repair. Firstly as we all love to slate Hafords I have to say that this time they came through. I went in looking for paint to match my TVR and believe it or not they had my paint code on their system AND it matches.

I have got two large chips right at the front of the bonnet right down to the fibre glass. So far I have Masked, sanded down primed and given about 3 coates of paint. I was happy up til this point as the paint was a pretty good match. However!!! When it came to putting on the laquer coat the paint went really dark where the repair had been made making it stand out like the proverbial. What am I doing wrong? after the paint coats I used a rubbing compound to smooth it off and it looked good just a bit dull so thought the laquer would bring the shine back. Am I wrong putting the laquer on or should I have not used the rubbing compound and instead used some wet & dry? Any help greatly appreciated.

I too got touch up paint from halfords, they have loads of tvr paint codes listed and mine matches perfectly.
Bargain I reckon at 8 quid for 100ml.

My car is the same colour as yours ( and oddly enough we share the same profession).

Hi Tim,
I decided to go to Halfrauds as per above advice and beleive it or not after much hunting through books of swatches I thought I would give them the paint code and see what happened.....its there......but they call it 'storm grey'. They mixed up a can full (you can get spray can or brush) about £6 from memory. I got it home did loads of pred on the chips and isnt not too bad. There were two really deeps ones which have been a pain but only because it takes ages to get the build up of layers. One thing I noticed though is dont put laquer over the top it changes the colour! Just spray on (or spray a little into the cap and use a small brush) build up the layers until it looks like too much then rub back with a good rubbing compound and polish. Yes if you look closely you can see it but hey its better than it was. I would only try this on small chips or scratches as the bigger patches are much more noticeable. Good luck. I don't think you need to use the rubbing compound before the laquer, I have always just flatted the paint leaving a dull finish, the laquer is then applied and it is the laquer that is buffed to give the shine. Maybe the rubbing compound has had an effect on the finish.

ok. Sorry for the delay. Here it is. Paint code is P422, TVR Storm Grey Met. Just check yours is the same before you order. My paint code was on the information plate under the bonnet near the bulkhead.

Are you sure that your car is Storm Grey? I had some paint made up and it is way too dark. Went back today and and there are over 6 different Storm Grey colours listed under TVR for 1991 so they tried another couple but they were still too dark.

Now that I think about it, there was a nice early Griff for sale near me and that was a darker grey and probably much closer to the paint that Halfords made up. This makes me think that this is known under another colour instead.

If anyone can id the name of the colour used on my car ( paint code P422-1785 ) then please let me know. Pics of it here : http://deadpineapple.net/tvr

I had the same problem as Jed-S with my Ash Green S3. Halfords had 4 mixes listed and all were way too dark. Used the lightest to respray the mirrors and is not too noticable unless you stand with the light at a particular angle, but for touch up it is a no go.

Having looked thorugh my receipts though I have found that when the bonnet was re-sprayed the colour was sourced from a Mercedes Dealership (I always thought the TIV was the same colour as my last C220 which I still miss .......................... unless that is I'm in the TIV ), but have yet to buy and check this theory out.

Hi Jed,

No, my car according to the purchase details is 'Atlas Gray'. However when the guys at Halfords looked up the paint code from under the bonnet it was listed as 'Storm Gray'. Do look under your bonnet on the information plate my code was on there and they had it listed at halfords.

Mine is also Atlas Grey, its a VW colour. I have 2x spray cans at home which I use for touch ups. I will let you know the codes if it helps?

Thanks guys - looks like I ordered the wrong stuff, no wonder it didn't match up. Mind you they couldn't match it from the VIN plate codes.

In my defence I took the colour from the sales receipt from a dealer whose name would be familiar with TVR owners. Oh well, at least I know the name now.

I've been to another store and they have said that it is TVR Storm Grey and come up with the P422 which is on the VIN plate (they were a bit more helpful). The composition is the same as the stuff another store made up last time.

Hi Jed,
The paint I got from Halfords is an exact match for my car. If you look on my profile there is a picture of the car there to give you an idea of the colour. I would be very wary of buying any paint by name only though. If you are struggling to find your paint code halfords also do a very nifty system where by they have swetches of the paint in a giant book (3 actually) you can then take the swatch out and put it over your paint. There is a hole in the middle of the swatch to give you a better idea of the match. This way at least you can go through every metallice grey you can find, mind you there are a lot of them as I tried this system first!

PS I have had a look at your picture and I must say it looks pretty similar to the colour of my car. Never easy to tell from a picture though.

I got my paint ID'd as SAAB Rose Quartz and Halfords mixed it according to their instructions and it turned out much darker than my car... cant blame Halfords though as the car has previously been resprayed to a fairly close match (I can see some of the original colour under the bonnet) but it means I definitely cant order touch-up by code now... I wish I had known about the swatches though, I think I'll give that a try next...

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I am looking for the same paint that Jed-S was looking for. P422 1785. Did you ever find it?
It's not listed on the paint code list.

Some idiot was replacing the seats and left one balanced on a chair. I/he just went to fetch a spanner when it toppled off and scratched the door. What a fool!

Luckily it's only skin deep and I may as well touch up some stone chips at the same time.

I never found a perfect match for this colour. The VW colour suggested was Storm Grey and my local motor factor stocked tins of Hicote which wasn't too bad a match but not exact.

I did spend an hour going through the Halfords colour sheets but didn't find one that matched either. I'm resigned to having a scruffy S.
