Flickering Lights

Hello all from a newbie, I have just switched from Lotus Esprit SPORT 350 #23 500bhp to a Noble M12 GTO-3 and I have noticed the headlights and instruments flicker? any ideas how to rectify??????. I am also looking to do some upgrades! where should I start? any help would be most welcome. regards Ricie

welcome to the forum

you might want to get the transmission upgraded before you go for more power

have you got a lsd fitted ? 5 or 6 speed box ?

most upgrades are for intercooler/exhaust to start with

a remap and the above can get you around 400 bhp

I suggest you get your gearbox strengthened and fit a quaife atb

you have a choice of intercoolers - a Faulks performance one(I have one fitted) or a Proalloy one

Exhausts. there is the Rousch exhaust which is good but a bit expensive - I can do you one to my own design for around 1500 fitted

Do they flicker all the time or randomly? When the fans cut in they pull down the alternator for a second until the regulator adjusts the output, this really shows up at night as the lights dim out and then come back.

Gents, regarding the headlight flicker… I may be able to shed some light on this…

I have a Mondeo ST200, which has the same basic 2.5 Duratec V6, and have suffered with the headlights and interior (and dash) lights flickering – especially at idle.

Having searched through the Ford TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) this was found – originally for the Cougar (again, same engine)…

[i]Summary

Should a customer express concern about flickering headlamps, wavering illumination of the instrument cluster, interior lighting and audio unit the probable cause is an extremely high resistance in the battery wiring harness from the central junction box (under the bonnet) to the B+ terminal on the alternator. To rectify the concern an additional cable should be installed.

Apparently the high resistance from the 7.5A fuse to the alternator multi plug causes it to "pulse" so the new loom does away with this by taking a new feed direct from the main battery cable on the back of the alternator. I had the cable fitted at the weekend, and it has resolved my headlight flicker…

When the fans on my car kick in, my headlights + dashboard lights dim but also my upgraded fuel pump's noise changes audio pitch slightly.

Does anyone know if the fuel delivery is disrupted when the fans switch on?

I would think that it wouldn't cause any problems. as the fuel pump/car are at idle when you notice it. when the fuel demand is higher/higher engine revs do you still notice the fans cutting in/out?

no i haven't noticed the fans cutting in and out with high revs. I suppose there isn't anything to worry about.
