A6 2.0 Tdi S line / A4 170 TDI S Line or Passat 170tdi Sport
Discussion
Which would you have....wife has the option of all 3 as well as a bmw 320d...Looking for honest opinions from owners and users please...Forgot to mention all cars must be auto.....Also need a frank opinion as the A6 is a gorgeous car but to me from what i can see only comes with the 138bhp engine which i think is underpowered...Doesnt this car get the 170bhp engine as well...??
Either of the audis though i would possibly go for the a6 depending on spec.I have a 2001 130 a4 145000mls going strong easy maintenance never gone wrong or the bmw as there diesels are much more refined than the vag units and on top of which they are rwd which in my book is a plus over front or even 4wd.

Avoid 4 clyinder VW/Audi pd diesel engines like the plague, they are rubbish.
Wouldn't go as far as saying they're rubbish, but what they gain in power and economy they lose in refinement. They are very much louder than their commonrail rivals.new 170ps PD engine is not all that bad!
I have just done 600 miles in it in four days, and it is comfortable, and the engine really isn't that loud. It is a far better sound than other similar engines, from VX, Ford etc. The only engine that is closest is the Honda CDTi.
I recommend a Passat, but get the SEL if you can, Cruise is key on the estate version.
The DSG Auto is well chronicled as being awesome ... but I prefer the manual ...

I've got a SEL 170 TDI DSG Estate, have also had a 140bhp TDI MK5 Golf and a 6cyl E90 BMW 330d and a E46 320d
So having had 4 different diesel engines the ones i've enjoyed the most have and are the VW PD engines they are a little aggricultural sounding but the performance of them is excellent.
But the 170 engine is awesome compared to the 140 very smooth and the lag with the DSG is unnoticable something that was noticeable with the 330d.
I'd get the 170 in the A4 or Passat as an aside the new Passat is very good all round package and also the interior of the A4 as it runs out to the new model is going look dated quickly.

Bought an A6 2.0 S-Lline last year, purely because the Passat SEL wasnt available for a test drive at the time.Liked the Audi to start with but do agree its underpowered. Also it turned out to be THE most unreliable car I have ever owned,so much so, that I refused to take it back the last time.
On reflection after such a bad Audi ownership experience,I would go for the VW.....(OR get a BMW 520d M-Sport,200 miles in and I can tell already its leagues ahead of the Audi in terms of smoothness and pace)
ps Audi will not put the 170 engine in the A6 as it will all but make the 2.7l tdi redundant

Save for a slightly noisey idle I would go so far as to say it's very good
It's the 140 BHP lump that's the problem, it is just too small for a big, heavy car.huge said:

2.7 is hopeless, I don't know why it's there when the 3 litre is so good. Likewise, the old 2.5 TDI lump was in production for far too long and even the newest 180 BHP ones feel old for their age.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
