I'd be interestd to know what people think the best marine engine & drive combo(no outboards) my top three are:

MAN 1100 ZF Box / Shaft.
Volvo KAD 42 with Duo prop
Yanmar 420 on trimax / Buzzi drive

OK decided to add a few guidelines:
Should be reliable.
Should be I'd like one.
should be something you wouldn't mind being left mid channel in charge of.

Your votes??????

Mercruiser 502mpi gen 6 V8 with bowled and ported heads, uprated valve springs, roller rockers and a lary cam with straight through exhausts on a bravo 1 swinging a 26" maximus.

Best noise, best performance, best hairy chest statement in front of the birds and best way to get rid of petrol and bugger the climate. So thereevil

er what about the bulldog blueprinted motors??? now that's how to burn fuel.. I think the Yanmars would give them a run for the money in a race boat Buzzi rib?

Blueprinted Bulldog 500s yes give you that although the above spec isn't far short of that.

Illmor V10s are becoming a great race engine, but I suppose a traditionalist would always plump for the Lambo V12 if you could afford to keep it in one piece

I'm afraid I keep the diesels for my cruising tubs not race boats.

That said the round britain race should give them a good showing due to reliability. Don't think Buzzi is going to use them himself though.

I was actually thinking best allrounder and reliable, obviously performance engines are great fun but they aren't the sort of thing you'd want in your daily runner.

yes they are making a V12 and a W16 2100~HP engine range but they have thrown in with the russians.... MTU make a V16 which is more commonplace.

It's got to be the Chevy / Merc / OMC 5.7litre V8

Cheap to buy, cheap spares, tuneable, reliable, versatile, great sound.

No contest really!

Got one in a 1983 Sea Ray V207 - never had an engine problem in 25 years...

The Chevy V8 is THE ubiquitous engine - has powered vehicles in the air, on the land and sea for decades. Perhaps the Merc marinisation wasn't great, or there were issues with the the Bravo 3, but I doubt the lack of reliability is anything to do with the basic mechanics of the Chevy unit.

(I do prepare to stand corrected though. Inevitably!)

Yanmar 420 with trimax, it's bombproof and best power to weight ratio (if you include fuel fractional weight for any given reasonable range)

Bravos are nicknamed 'snap offs' for a good reason.

I would go for Yanmar too.

One thing to concider, how much to parts and consumables cost for each one where you are AND where you plan to take said boat to?

For example, out here Volvo Penta stuff costs an arm and both legs, MANN parts for small boats just don't exist, its all private import, but Yanmar are easy!

For what it's worth-i do a fair amount of boating and generally diesel engines with screws, my picks would be:

Cummins
Cat
Yanmar

Ive heard nothing but bad things about Volvo and Mercruiser but as always may just be nonsense.
