Salem,
I have to go out soon, but I will get my road map and give you the road numbers and some points of interest for you around the Howarth locality later this afternoon or this evening. There are some great roads and you will enjoy yourself.

Salem,
I have a few roads you can try, depending on whether you are looking for a short spin or a day out you can find some good roads. If you want you can email me bowlandforestry@aol.com with a more definite idea of what you want, but I will list a few to start with.
1)Take the road from Howarth, through Stanbury, towards Colne, when you get to the A6068 at Laneshawbridge, you will see a pub called the Emmot, go straight across and down a country lane for half a mile, you will then reach a T Junction, turn right. This will take you on the old road to Skipton, with some interesting bends and "The Big Dipper".
2) A short run on the sweeping A6033 takes you to Hebden Bridge, which is an interesting little place. You can then return to Howarth the long way round, via Heptonstall, then at Slack bear right onto the Widdop road which takes you over a nice moor road, back through Trawden and then to Howarth.
3) The A682 from Barrowford to Long Preston is an interesting route, but if you go on a Sunday take care for the bikers who like to use this road. Carry on to Settle or Kirkby Lonsdale for Fish and Chips or a pub meal. Watch for mobile speed cameras when the bikes are out!
4) If you want to venture further afield, get to Clitheroe just off the A59 and then take the B6478 over Waddington Fell, through Newton, then on to Dunsop Bridge. 1/4 mile out of Dunsop Bridge is a 90 degree left, with a turn to the right for Lancaster. Take the right turn, this is the famous road through "The Trough Of Bowland" Take a camera. A word of warning, watch for the Volvo estates coming on your side of the roads over the weekend!
Have a look at your map and let me know if any
of these routes interest you and I can advise on good pubs to eat at and which ones to avoid.
We have some great roads, but as always, they are best enjoyed through the week, as all types of terrible drivers can be encountered on Sat/Sun.

Thanks
I will get in touch when I am heading into Wales for some advice off you. Feel free to get in touch for more info on our local roads before you go to Howarth. Where are you staying in Howarth by the way? Took my wife on our first date to Howarth and stayed in the White Lion (or was it Golden Lion).

We had a lovely weekend and the weather held out for us to... lovely roads up there, however some you wouldnt want to do after a full English breakfast lol..

Stunning scenary to match those roads too and with the leaves changing on the trees it was even better..

Anyway here are a couple of pictures

Will have to pay a visit again in the summer to sample the roads we just didnt get time to do.. Thank you

Hi All,
I'm taking a trip up to the Yorkshire Dales this weekend and would love to know the names of some of the roads pictured above!
I will be based in Arncliffe in the Dales, so any scenic routes that wend back towards London from there would be great!
Thanks as always for everyones great advice!

Loads of good roads round there and a good drive is ... from settle to ribblehead, from ribblehead to hawes, hawes to Thwaite (butter tubs - ye har...), thwaite to Nateby, Nateby to Garsdale head, Garsdale head to Hawes, Hawes to Ingleton, and refill with hi-octane at the BP Station in Hawes that at w/e and bankHols is full of petrol head's cars and bikes... Cafe's / Pubs in all villages mentioned. Oh and if you come across the Police livered Scooby pursuit car don't try and out run it; you wont, ever! It's not standard...

Next sunday im looking to do a route similar to this in my new car (grande punto t-jet).Only 20 so dont know my way around north yorkshire all that well but my plan is to start from home huddersfield, head out through halifax and onto keighley and then upto skipton.Head upto to settle and onto ribblehead, onto hawes, onto thwaite and then upto nateby. Then try and find my way back.No doubt i will get lost somewhere along the way, but what the hell, it should be fun.All my mates cant understand why i always go out on pointless drives etc, but i love it for some reasons.Hopefully there will be some quality roads on that route, although no doubt it is littered with speed cameras so will have to do a little research before next sunday. Will take some photos and post them up sunday night hopefully

Pointless drives are much better than sitting around comparing 0-60 times smile

I don't think there are too many speed cameras on that route but North Yorkshire are known for using lasers to catch speeders, particularly on the more popular routes.

Afternoon all,

a quick Google search lead me to this thread, so I hope you don't mind me reviving it after over 4 years!

I'll be taking my MX5 to The Fat Lamb near Kirkby Stephen in the next couple of months, probably March. I'm really looking forward to it!

Any updates on the area's best drives? We'll be there for a long weekend of sightseeing, walking, pub food, but more importantly, good drives!

Try and head for Barnard castle then take the B6277 to Alston this is one off my favourite runs usually very quiet .. From Alston take the A686 towards Penrith Awesome road stop at the Hartside cafe and if its a Sunny day watch the nutty bikers.
Quit a few nice cars head up there too.
Then follow the A66 east and back to your base The 66 is worth a run over have fun

loads of good roads south of there too. head for Hawes then down past ribblehead to ingleton you won't be disappointed
