Ted Marlow gave me a great price on an Ultima GTR
Discussion
I got sent a quote from Ted Marlow for a decent specced Ultima GTR. I live in the US and have been watching the Ultima GTR since it was introduced in 1999. He sent me a price of $50,051.00 flat. I think that is a very decent price considering the looks, performance and character of an Ultima. Of course I would be upgrading over time after the build but this is a great start. What do you blokes think?

That sounds about right...depending on what options you have ordered. However, if an engine and trans is included, you should be prepared to receive a revised spreadsheet. If you want to email the spreadsheet to me, I can look at it and compare it to mine...which was just a few "K" less without engine and trans a few years ago. I also sourced locally the shifter and cables, tires, fuel system, instruments, dash cover and carpet, and a few other items. Did that include A/C?Builder said:

Yes, that sounds about right...
You would have to remove line 70 - Heater - and add A/C, if you want it. That's about $2k.
You don't have a dash cover in there; Alcontera or Leather. Opt for the leather (about $600) because Alcontera will fade over time. You may want to switch your seats to leather to match. Seems they were $1,600?
It looks like you've configured standard dampers - line 35 not Intrax adjustables.
Price out tires State-side. Ultima may have a good price on tires and the shipping is included. I don't know what the import tax rate on tires is. Got mine locally.
As suspected, no engine or trans. Therefore, you will also purchase the complete exhaust system, cats if you need them, and headers, an oil cooler, the fuel system, alternator, (some) coolant lines, and engine electronics (ECU). Engine and trans based on your budget. The very minimum would be probably around $10-$12K for a descent Chevy 350HP crate engine and a used Porsche trans. The A/C compressor is included in the A/C kit. However, the unit is for an SBC using V-belt pulleys. So, if you go serpentine, you will need to change the pulley and/or compressor depending on the engine selection.
Email me if you want to know how to save some money here... Add import duty and customs clearance service for another $2500 and you've got your Ultima!!! Well, at that point I should say you have body parts, a chassis, and a whole bunch of boxes full of beautiful parts that can be turned into an Ultima with your craftsmanship.
You might spend another $2-$3K in miscellaneous stuff; tools, paint, maybe some fiberglass cloth and resin, lights, switches, and other minor welding and customization. Of course, you can go nuts and spend whatever you want.

PS: Forgot the shifter. You may end up with cable-shift, so add cables too.
Anything else? ...besides thousands of gallons of fuel?
So you think I should forget about the shifter? OK. So all in all it comes out to be around $60k or so with upgraded suspension, brakes, low pan kit(so I can wear a helmet if need be), exhaust, etc. The question is should I drop the project I have going now and part it out? The project car I have now is a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 that I am upgrading to about 950 all wheel horsepower. The project is nearing completion but there are some holdups that are stopping me from getting it on the road until early next year. Anything else? ...besides thousands of gallons of fuel?

Hey man...your PistonHeads name says it all. One thing I can tell you is that it's a lot easier to build a complete car from the groud up, rather than rebuild an old one. It's totally up to you. The VR4 is a cool car. You could put a deposit on an Ultima and work on the VR4 to get it on the road. I think you will have about 3-4 months after ordering before you need to come up with more dough.
Yes, forget about the shifter for now. If you are serious, you should jump on that G50/52 that Steve has for sale on PistonHeads. Those are rare now and the perfect trans for the GTR. Get California Motorsports to go through it and make it sweet.
Let me inject a thought. I agree with Builder without exception. The LS series is the way to go beyond a doubt. If you can't afford an LS 7 there are plenty of ls2 with 400 hp available for $5000. the factory offers a lovley serpentine kit with A/C compressor and altenator for $1600. A freind is building a ls7 GTR now and just took deivery of the optiopnal kit last week. You can also do what I did and mount late model GTO pulleys brackets belts ect for perhaps a little less money. If you live in California say so and I will fill you in on SB100 if you are not alreday aware of that way of registaring your car. I have a GTR with an LS1 I had the headers built here in Los Angeles and they are way cool. Good luck with your projects. I will also second Builders thought about easier to buid a quality kit like a GTR then it is to modify an exsisting one. I have a Renault R5 Turbo which I modified up to 300 HP, big brakes MAXI 5 body, bla bla bla I have more time, blood, money and tears in the R5 then the GTR by a bunch. Lee
