You see everything in London and I saw an R8 in red the other day, plus there was a brave chap going round the ring in one when I was there a few weeks ago.....Stunning car...I don't mind that it's an Audi...I was trounced by an RS6 on Sunday on the motorway in my 911....I don't however want to pay 100k for one...Given the rarity value wearing off eventually what does everyone think they will be worth in a year or two...I should be able to get in one to have a look soon but a 100k........

You'll still be paying 60 - 70 k for them in 3 years time. I can imagin there will be some high milers as its an audi so the owners will use it every day.

Premiums have fallen off ever so slightly now, plenty around at 92-94.

Everyone will ditch them when the V10 R8 comes out, so they will take a drop then. And again when the RS8 comes out. I suspect the base V8 version will be well under 50k in three years.

50k sounds better.....But I am still tempted by a Maserati Gransport.

here is the list if anyone is interested , yet to be whittled down to one for the next car:

Maserati GT
Audi R8
Cayman S
Ferrari 360
911 turbo. model TBC although 993 a favourite
New M3/or older CSL
Audi RS4

To be honest a lot of the fun is in the choosing...The only needs I have is that I can drive across continents without drama.....Price points obviously different too but I rate them similarly equally in terms of enjoyment....

Well, if you need it to be a long distance/continental cruiser, I'd forget the 2 Italian cars straight away......Could you really trust them to get you there and back without drama?

Quite a wide price range you are looking at!!

Let me get this right...

You have a 911 and you want an R8?

I took my 997 C2S to Spa (closed!), the 'Ring and Hockenheimring earlier this year in the hopes of some track driving and maxing it. Too much traffic to get near 184 or whatever they say it should be, but great fun anyway, 'Ring scarier than anything I've done, especially in my own car.

Regularly get 28mpg from the C2S, 26 on German trip including 'Ring. Every trip is a special treat, even when it's on the drive parked I can enjoy it.

Spent ages poring over the R8 at Hockenheimring. It's big!!! It must be fast but doesn't stack up against a 997 for me personally and I still do biggish mileages so mpg and service interval and comfort and space to park count.

My wife has a nice Audi and it is nice. It does several things that the 997 doesn't and it has wicked audio including those card readers. It's her third Audi and fifth consecutive Audi/VW. It's better built (or feels that way) than previous Mercs, it's classy and it doesn't offend others. It's an Audi.

The 997 on the other hand... well it's a 911.

Sorry.

Yawn! Some people view cars on their strengths, some are just slaves to image and those 3 numbers. I am far from a 911 knocker as I had a deposit down on a 996TT until child news made me back out and buy the closest thing I could find that was a 4 door TT with a decent boot, the RS4.

But 911 are as common as 3 series round my neck of the woods, having seen a few R8s they are far more striking and modern looking than a 911 (in my IMVHO as this is subjective and I still love the 911 styling), it has proven to be quicker round a track, I would be surprised if it was less comfortable or less fuel efficient than a 911, better warranty etc etc

I am not saying the R8 is better as its a personal choice but I am not blinkered enough to think it is not a match if not better than a 911 in many ways (and thank goodness someone has finally challenged the 911) so why is it surprising many are considering it over a 911. People who's argument is "but its not a Porsche" just strike me as tunnel visioned to put it politely.
