The French Police have kept my licence as I mistakenly read 90km/h for 90 mph (yes really officer !)

How do I get it back, does it get posted home ?

The form I got says apply to the French Embassy, has anyone had to do this before, thanks for all your replies.
PS Le Mans was great would do it again tommorrow !

Hmmm. Possibly the dvla already know where your licence is......
It is part of the new EU 'cooperation scheme'.

It's an offense not to have your license on you when driving in France so you'll probably end up in a cell until they manage to geta copy from DVLA. And a HUGE fine

Spoke to the DVLA today and apparently the French pigs have no legal basis to withold your licence. Try telling the garlic eating gendarmerie that whilst you're in the back of the van

"er u av no right to hold my licence monsieur" - truncheon on the 'ead later, ok that will be 750euros then, "av it then if you really want it !"

Also there is no co-operation between the French police and British so no points etc either, so its just a case of identifying where the licence actually is and applying to get it back.

The man at the DVLA was surprised to find out that the French were witholding licences and is investigating further - vive la france, my arse !

So its off to phone the embassy tommorrow,

So does that mean you can say you have lost it and apply for another?

I just hope you haven't asked one question too many.

"The baguette munchers held my license".

"They can't do that".

"I know, it wasn't as if I was doing 165 between Rouen or Calais or anything"

Apparently they were to be returned to the British embassy in France. Worth a ring I guess, or just get a new one from DVLA (10er or so I think).

Most likely your license was sold for a further 200 Euros and the French police are still endulging in beer and prostitutes on your money.

Figured as much - not sure how i would communicate this to them in my ragged french, but i'd be buggered if i let some one (British Police included) take my licence from me at the scene....

If they had a problemwith your driving all they can do is escort you to the ferry under some form of convoy as far as i am aware (thought)

I also question the on the spot 750 euro fine (what would an equivalent french driver get pulled for?), but figure its a light way out of it.

Hope you get it back soon anyhow, my experience of gendarmes after leaving france is not good though, so don't expect anything to happen with any urgency....
