How expensive is it to tweek a Scoob up to, say around 400bhp these days?
And will it still be the reliabe motor it is today?

Intially a UK Wagon 2000 Turbo (217bHP/215lb/ft torque)

Now has simple mods.... (£1250)

Scoobysport catless downpipe
Magnex bacbox
Remapped Ecutek ECU
ITG filter

285BHP, 277LB/FT Torque...

Mate has 355BHP /330ft/lb's via a dfferent turbo, front mount intercooler , induction system..

Think you will need engine internal mods and better ECU power/mapping to get to 400bHP.. don't forget brakes, suspension etc

Scratchndiff....

400bhp is achievable though if you did it on standard internals, it would soon go bang as many including myself have found......

Relistically the following would need to happen:

steel crank £1000-£4000
Con rods steel or titanium £150-£600 (4)
Pistons Omega or Arrows £200-£600 (4)
Cylinders re bored to 2.2 approx £300-500 per cylinder
Coopers rings, strengthened bolts etc and labour approx 55 hours to take apart and reassemble
2-3 days of dyno testing
larger sump - 6 litres £650
equal length manifold £750+
larger turbo £1000+
larger injectors £120+ (4)
Remap £650
New clutch £450

For a proper job you wouldn't see much change from £8000 though the engine would be strong and reliable and would be able to handle 1.8 bar - 2.2 bar of boost fairly easily.

Peak torque would be around 5500 rpm no point revving beyond that.....work would take about 4-6 weeks

285 for just that list?? that's very impressive! All reliable I take it?

Yes but remember the Japanese fugures are often on 100RON fuel. Just running a pre-facelift Scooby on Optimax or Superunleaded will give some extra bhp (up to 230???)(over the standard UK figure quoted on Unleaded).

I also understood (SIDC??) that giving so many seconds of full boost forces ignition remaps in the standard ECU to take best effect of higher or lower octane fuel.

The exhaust also offers more power but Prodrive don't recommend changing the exhaust back box unless you remap the engine..unless you want more noise!!!!

I understood getting a Scooby to 400bhp is bit like the impossible, ie a reliable 800bhp Skyline, 600bhp EVO or Cosworth (see Top Gear Last Week).

I would recommend getting the handling sorted out before going on mega power hikes. Even with my standard UK car with Prodrive Handling Kit and Superunleaded I've never been passed by a V8 TVR on a trackday (that wasn't driven by a Professional) and that includes Cadwell, Oulton Park and Castle Coombe!!!! Do you really need 400bhp (except to brag down the pub!!!)

If you really want big bhp go and buy an old Can-Am car...rolling thunder at its best!

Mucho appreciated chaps. Although an Evo 7 or possibly 8 is now in the equation. Went to xxxxx Subaru today and test drove a WRX STi, which was very nice.
Then went straight to Mitsubishi for a frantic test drive in an Evo8 FQ300. WOW!!
BOTH nice cars, but the guy at Subaru did slag off the Evo and throw in some BS for good measure though. Mitsubishi DID NOT. For me, that says many things....

Proof was in the pudding.

snag is... wind the window down and it's obvious which car is better (for me 50% of the car is the sound... if it sounds like a mit-sew-bishi machine then i'd be disappointed)

(didja hear both cars on top gear last week? every time the subaru drove off i couldn't help going mmmmmmmm )

Granted, the sound is important, as my Griff was a 4.3(argueably the best sounding TVR ) and it means alot. The Scoob DOES have a nicer exhaust note, but for me these cars are more about turbo-kick acceration and sticking to the road via trick technology. And for this reason the Evo just feels more like a rally car than the Scoob. But, the STi does have something special about it that can't be explained.

Hi ShadowNinja,

Yep the straight through downpipe gives approx 15 - 20 BHP and is know to be a main restriction. Allows the turbo to spool up at 2400rpm not the normal 3000rpm.

ECU remap also frees BHP, but the main difference is the flatter torque curve it produces across the rev range. All depends on the mapper doing it and the boost he goes to... aka the other points on internals
