Audi S3 52 plate 225 Bam engine standard:

Car judders when I try and accelerate, guys at the garage plugged it in and they replaced one of the engine coils then it wokred fine, but the engine managment light came on, then this morning (a week later) same problem car juddering, so I guess engine coil has gone yet again, I wouldn't mind but its costing me 50 quid a time.

Any ideas on what should I do ?

Thanks

There will be 4 coils - did they replace all of them or just the one which they thought was faulty last week ?
Does the car warm up OK ? If not it could be a problem with the temperature sender, although this should have shown up on the diagnostics.

Thanks for the response, they replaced one that was faulty, the diagnosis pointed it to the coil. I am taking it in today, but I cant keep shelling out 50 quids everytime one goes

IIRC, Audi got a faulty batch, you'll probably find they all go, then you'll be fine. How come they're £50 though? I thought these coil packs were about £15 each? Maybe wrong there though. They're pretty easy to change yourself.

I had exactly the same problem last year with my 51 plate S3, when the first one went I took it to Audi and they replaced the faulty one free of charge, then a couple of months later another one went. After much moaning to the service manager I got them to relace all 4 free of charge.

I was told that a few years ago this was recognised as a common fault by VAG, and I'm not sure whether it was a re-call item or whether they were just replaced them FOC as and when they failed, but I reminded the service manager of this repeatedly and in the end they replaced them all. Touch wood it's been fine since!

Best of Luck!

Temp sender? or maybe not lol. Couldnt possibly cause it to missfire. Coils are a common fault, again just replace the faulty one and see what happens. You should be ok as they sometimes go in pairs.

If the sender doesn't work propery the car will over or under fuel.
As you know everything, what happens if there is not enough fuel ?

Have seen symptoms on a Golf 1.8T which pointed to a coil but turned out to be a temp sender.

Coil pack for my A4 was £19 from main dealer. Took 2 mins to fit and needed no tools either.

Two of my packs went - replaced them both but the system needs to be reset to turn off the Engine management system warning light. I found out afterwards that Audi will replace them FOC as long as you have it done at an Audi garage - if the AA/ RAC do it then they won't refund you.
Costs circa £35 for the 225 ones so those quotes are a little high!

Unofficialy, Audi are warranting them all for 5 years now. It's a known issue but they won't admit it needs a modification/new part.

Kick up a fuss with your dealer and they should replace for you FOC.
