I was pottering around youtube looking for something when I came across this...

I know we've discussed tyre shake before, but this is the first time I've seen it in slow mo video.. I was looking for an in-car shot that was shown on the 5 US footage (missed it for some reason), but this still shows just how violent tyre shake is..

I think it also shows that it appears to be the tyre catching up with itself and bouncing the wheel away from the tarmac..

Frank Hawley has written that the way to avoid shake is to apply more power to keep the tires slipping longer. I believe it's because that when it happens, it's one tire hooking before the other, that wheel winds up within the tire (like they both do at launch), then the other tire's tread hooks while one is behind the other. All the power would then go to the ground via the one "tight" tire, breaking it loose, then go to the other tire, winding it up before the other one hooks again, breaking that one loose, and so on. You can see the diameter of the tires in that video changing from larger to smaller to larger, just like they do when they wind up at launch. I think keeping them slipping longer gives them more of a chance to both hook up more gradually and evenly.

Brenden Murry told me at Hot Rod Reunion last year that he's run the same 9" Ford STREET GEAR in his blown nitro FED for two years because of narrow rear tires and a soft clutch setting, that he never shakes. We watched a blown alcohol FED with less power and huge tires go out and wheelstand, then shake it's butt off on it's first run.

I know this is old, but its a favorite 'shaker' of mine.

Tyre shake in Top Fuel? Tends to be a bad thing. Driving through it is one thing but then to blow it up and keep on going.... Mike Strasbourg has obviously got too much money!
