Breakdown Recovery (AA / RAC etc)
Discussion
Dear all, can any body reccomend another breakdown recovery company? I will be cancelling my policy with the RAC in the next few days due to the ignorance shown recently, when my clutch gave out. i won't bore you with all the details,
but it took 3 days and several visits by differant sub-companies to try and move my Chim,
even though during my first call to the RAC, i told them that i needed a demountable flat back lorry!
Can any body recommend another company, AA / Greenflag etc?
Thanks in advance
Steve

I have Assure Assist which i took out with my insurance through A Manning. This is basically run by the AA and they have been fine both times i have had to use them for when my power steering rack went. I said to them on the phone that there was no point them sending out a patrol to look at it as it just needed to get on a flatbed and get taken to a garage.
Both times they said fine we'll send out a flatbed. 1st time was very impressed as they sent a very special one that got incredibly flat - special one for sports cars. 2nd time was an AA one which not as low and exhaust scrapped very slightly getting on, but just ok getting off.
Took a couple of hours each time, but have to say i have been impressed with them.

I was with the AA for years and switched to the RAC. To be honest I don't think there's much between them breakdown wise, whenever I've used either the service has been good. The RAC will take you home on a low loader door to door whereas the AA tend to pass you around if it's a long journey. I liked the fact that the RAC gave a "no claims" discount but I understand they have stopped doing that for new joiners now.
I get AA cover free with my bank account ... upgraded the level of cover a bit though.
Only had to call them once when my throttle cable detached itself.
I explained on the phone that they would not be able to fix it on the road, that I needed transporting and could they send something suitable as a tow was not an option.
They were fab, the driver fell in love with my car, brough extra bits of wood and stuff to make sure he could get it on the flat bed and padded out every wheel attachment to ensure nothing marked my car.
It all happened on a Sunday in Somerset, and I wanted my car to go to Racing Green in Hants - the distance/journey was not an issue. The AA said not a problem, took us and the car home and helped us get it safe and sound in the garage, then collected it the next weekend at a time that suited me to take it to Racing Green.
I think you have to really explain the problem well on the phone when you call for help, and this prevents any misunderstandings later on.
I used to use Green Flag, but again only ever called them out the once when the alternator pulley fell off my Allegro. It's hard to judge how good or bad these companies are if you rarely need them, I guess.

I've been with the AA for some years and they have always been good. Only had to call out twice for TVRs, once when my cerb caught fire and a sepcialist low loader arrived very quickly and the other time was a far more routine matter. They have introduced a number limit on the amount of times in a year you can call them out, but I guess they all have some limit. Dave
