www.scparts.co.uk should be able to sort you out with a hood mascot, but please don't do this ! It's prob. legal but the XK8 is as pedestrian friendly as prestige cars get unless, of course, you add spiky projections to the bonnet. "Offensive projections" are a pretty big deal safety wise (and an important part of the SVA) this is why, for example, you don't often see headlight wipers anymore and wiper bosses are hidden under the trailing edge of the bonnet (as well as aerodynamics.)

You have to be very careful in adding badges/mascots to the car. If the car wasn't orginally fitted with a mascot then the "rule of thumb" is not to fit it. As has been mentioned Kit cars have suffered from this 'newish' law and I'm sure you could end up either being pulled by the "boys in blue" or getting an MOT failure.

Yes, your right - there is a pedestrian injury part to the MOT to ensure that there are no sharp edges to the bodywork that can cause injury. Even the modern Mercs have had to have folding badges for years!

If the mascot was fitted as standard on the car then this is passable. However, anything fitted as an aftermarket addition is a bit no-no. Unless it can be proven to colapse or deform in accordance to government guidelines - i.e. dont bother.

Cheers,

Paul

Not to nitpick, but haven't Mercs had folding badges for decades? (I remember my dad's 1983 230E had a folding badge)
Just how long have they been non-rigid?

Isn't even the Spirit of Ecstacy on rollers folding (even so it'd still make a nasty mess of a pedestrian...)

Not folding strictly speaking if you apply pressure to the lady she bows down into the grill hangs around for a while then gracefully rises back up to her position. I love it and get hours of fun just working the mechanism its better than any cup holder I've seen (well maybe not the saab one that lowers and rotates)

mel, you currently have:
Tatty van, Mobile Home (nearly as tatty), Landrover Freelander, Griff 4.3, ZX7RR Privateer Superbike & Endurance race bike (now for sale e-mail if interested), R6 Supersport race bike, ZX12R roadbike.
Who's RR have you been molesting ? Or do you just have to lean on the radiator every time you see one?
I think the spirit of ecstacy has been shrinking for a year or two, but even I think it would be a tradegy if it too was culled for safety reasons.

When I worked at a MOT place the boys in blue pulled a jag and made him fit nylon nuts (like those used on number plates) to the back so it would come off if hit.

fly through the windscreen and brain the driver. Excellent.
This all sounds like a lot of aggravation, why not buy a used (recent) Jag and a Mk2 ?

Thanks you chaps, appreciate your comments. Apparently they're legal (here, Germany) provided they're not mounted at the front of the bonnet. I was thinking of mounting it near the washers with a quick release (probably nylon nuts as suggested) The german MOT is very strict and they check cars on 156 points, and they think it'd be OK............. so
The disappearing Lady was, I believe, manufactured to stop lowlife stealing her.....???? This was certainly the case with the Muckycedes swabian swastika, young pimply sprogs used to wear them pinned to their nappy-pinned cheeks, as did old style rockers.....
The Dodge Ram rad figure disappeared due to "safety" concious PC plebs. As if anyone would survive being hit by 2.5 tonnes of 4x4 pick-up truck!!!???!!!
Again chaps my thanks
John

About the jag mascot they are legal in the usa but not in this country because of some brussels law about endangering pedestrians but in the usa they are allowed them because there are less pedestrians (apparently) this info is from my neighbour who is a police officer

I work wor Jag, and we are only allowed to fit them to US vehicles, and these have a special breakaway bolt, so they can be stolen. As far as i am aware it is illegal to have any ornament in any EU country, as it was an EU law that outlawed them in the first place.

I have no idea where you would get one from, if you still want to pursue it, but you will not be able to get one from Jag, as a dealer even a US one will not be able to knowingly sell one to an EU customer, due to liability. you can buy paperweights etc from the Jag collection at www.collection.co.uk/shop.asp, or you may be able to find one from a Jag specialist in the UK, but it aint easy as they go missing.

I used to have one from an early XJS that a mate borrowed? from someone in his village when i was 8 or 9. I had to give him my skateboard in exchange. Sad, i loved Jags then, and ended up working for the buggers!
