Make sure the cooling fans work properly.
With the car on, switch thre climate to 'auto'. BOTH fans should run constantly on slow speed. If they run fast, then stop, then run again then they need replacing. There is a modification which permanently fixes it for about £50 but as you're buying you might asl well go for a replacement cost - approx £300 fitted.
In fact, any deviation from slow running mean there is a problem which will ultimately blow the 40A fuse on top of the battery and allow the a/c compressor to overheat resulting in a big bill.
Search on www.uk-mkivs.net for more information.

Also check that the haldex oil and filter have been changed if the car has done over 40k. Even if the car has FSH check this specifically as its not part of the service.

Check the ECU software version. The numbers on the readout should read "Motortronic.....6463" or higher. If there is a flat spot in the acceleration at about 2800 rpm then it needs updating.

Most Mk IVs have been done but there are still a few about that haven't. Expect a dealer to charge 1/2 hrs labour. It used to be a warranty job but that is obviously no longer valid. If they try and palm you off, just go to another dealer.

Did you buy it privately or from a VW dealer?
