Hi Dave, what iyo is the bugbear(s) of running your G4 if there is one/any?

Would you change anything?
I know you had a episode with the 'drip'?

The one I drove for some time had noisy diff but it was not a worrying noise.
Odd ecu problem too but other than that I would have given it 9/10.

Why? Seriously considering one - would prefer a DZ but hard enough finding a 4.

As well as the diff, we also had to change the shocks (chose Protech - they are very good), as the Gaz ones the car came with were not up to the job and leaked via the stem seals. The old ones went back to Dare (via Spadge), but nothing came back from them, regrettably. Other problems? Well, the exhaust fell off, and at that point we found that the stainless cover was in two pieces, held on by what was basically a big Jubilee clamp. Spadge fixed that as well. The heater valve is not up to the job and leaks profusely when it is in the 'off' position - not got round to an answer yet, so I leave it on - not normally a problem up here, but it can get a bit warm inside! The collapsable parts of the steering column were not tight, so the steering column 'collapsed' when you hit the brakes hard... Fixed that one myself! When Spadge changed the diff, he commented that nothing was tight at the back, and suggested someone put the back end together, meant to come back after lunch to tighten everything and forgot.

On the road the car is a joy to drive, but not for long distances - it is too stiff for bumpy roads, and gets painful once the excitement of driving it starts to wear off. Buy one as an expensive toy that you don't expect to be 100% reliable and there is nothing better - including any Caterham (I had one - it was ghastly to drive). As you know, I have known the Walkletts for years and love my Ginettas (all nine of them, four of which are stull here). However, if they are going to survive they need to get the quality right. 'Aircraft build quality' was mentioned in another thread a while back - well maybe if you are comparing it to Aeroflot...

Thanks Dave - mostly things I might tinker/change anyway. Wonder why they put Gaz
on - ugh! - only time I ever see them is at Kit shows. I do know they have a two year warranty cause I looked at some they were flogging off cheap! so you should have got something back.

As for ride, fairly sure (I crawled under it more than a few times) the R reg mag test G4 had Spax and I found not just the handling but the ride and comfort fine (although personally I'd would not buy Spax). Prefer KYB (Jap) gas/adjustable platform but whether I could get any to fit is another question. Need something non-jarring cause of my back, although it's much better now.

Caterham (agree! flying coff..).

Most of the things you had go wrong sound very niggly but should never have reached you - especially the back end not tightened up! - that's appalling, the Halfords exhaust clamp (I can visualise that now!). The leaking Diff would have peed me off no end too.

Looking at secondhand obviously - would prefer hardtop but open is/has to be an option. Dave Balley's old Dare G4 was prob the nicest open 4 I have ever seen - the spec was something else - who ever got that has some car.
Note there is a white (G4 registration as yours but fitted plas no plate instead of sticker type.) G4 for sale now north of the border but not a double hump bonnet (that's a must!).

my 1998 Dare G4 was fitted with Spax, but dare recently changed them for the Protech dampers all round. This is what they use now as standard.
It has height adjustable platform and easy hand-adjustable knob for stiffness.
I have found that it handles so much better on stiffer setting.. as body roll otherwise is excessive
I have recently lowered ride height also by 0.75 inch, and although dry-sump, there is not much ground clearance due to bell-housing being lowest point
