I'm selling my Golf Gti and had somme intrest from this guy in the states. Has anybody got any experince/knowledge of the best / safest way of doing this. Will a standard UK spec GTi need any modification to run in the states?

I may be wrong but I think the car has to be over a certain age or the buyer will have to pay lots of tax, I’ve had a lot of interest from the states in the mini I’m selling.

I think they have probs with vehicle approval as well. Emissions are particularly nasty in California, and they have stringent safety legislation. Things like headlight position and bumper heights (if you've seen an American spec MGB you'll know what I mean - they cranked the suspension higher to get the headlights above the minimum height... nice). Should all be okay with your VW, but up to the buyer to find out.

I suppose best way is to find cost of container shipping (about 600 quid if I remember), get the money wired over in advance, then load the car on the transporter for him and wave it goodbye. He'll have to deal with customs/import duty and any type approval.

Sorry to bother you - I know 'the other' Dave Lacy, also into cars and probably oblivious of my 'domster' handle.

Good luck with the Porsche and flogging the veedub. The 944 is a decent car - you'll be saving for a 968 Club Sport soon!

Will all Dave Lacys please stand up ;-)

We must have more than a few John Smiths reading this, too, if we believe in the law of averages.
