Question re Chassis Dolly

I am almost finished sorting my garage before I place my order.

I have been fortunate enough to come across a chassis dolly (thanks Ben !)
that has been cut to make storage/transportation easier.

My question is - how critical is the 87" length measurement ?

My idea is to true up the cut ends and re-contruct the dolly as a
"bolt-together" version as per the picture here:

This would make the length more like 81" instead of 87".

Will the chassis still fit OK onto such a construction ?
(I believe the chassis rails angle inwards at certain points, don't they ?)

So far, it appears that the length shouldn't make too much difference. Yes, the rails angle in. Not an issue. Make sure you have the correct width at the length you choose.

Just don't try and make the fit so perfect that you can't slide the chassis (forward and back) a few inches on the resting pads. This will help you when anchoring lines and wire harness to the lower rail. I have moved it maybe four times to gain access to the rails.

Lastly, if I were going to design and build one, I would make sure the tubes that make up the lower part of the dolly bracing were all far enough above floor-level that the engine hoist (and any other equipment you plan to use) will roll under it. I have to jack my dolly up and put some wood under the wheels to roll my shop crane under the dolly frame. Needs to be "rollin' dubs"!
