Hi, I am in the process of rebuilding a 3000m, and therefor wondering about the power...I need moore! Thinking that since I am doing everything from scratch I might as well pay extra attention to the engine...

How much bhp would be available after a tripple weber setup (aprox)? And what other modifications (in adition to cams ) are recomended in order to get a durable resoult? And last but not least how much does it cost? are there any used ones available, turbos etc?

Any reply welcome......
I am new at this...

JW Engineering should be able to help with the tripple Webers. Heard that thay are a b*st*rd to set up and keep in tune.

Good luck!

The secret to gaining power from the essex engine is in making it breathe which in standard form it does very badly. The single most important thing is to fit a camshaft with at least 0.40inch lift. Using flow bench testing on cylinder heads shows that up to about 7000rpm a four barrel Holley with a low plenum inlet manifold produces better results than tripple webbers and stays in tune.Bigger valves and PROPER porting, decent exhaust maniflods, balanced crank assembly, Bosche distributor with electronic ignition and steel timing gear should give reliabilty and 200+(real)bhp

Big Exhausts - see Calling all Carb threads

JW aren't terribly keen on Triple Webers, but Ric Wood (see Oily Pages) has done much including big bore Essex's with very trick alloy heads.. up to 400bhp, it just depends how deep your pockets are.

Don't forget the rest of the car, the TR6 diff is your 74M will give up very quickly with too much power (front plate stresses), the driveshafts are designed for that much power, and the brakes!!!! (and gearbox)

There is a triple webered M in Manchester owned by John Livsey which has a Cosworth GA block (3.4 Essex) with Ric Wood trick heads, Tony Law exhaust, over 340bhp, but it just breaks everything else driveshafts, twisted prop! and clutches

My advise is, if you really want that much power, sell the M and buy a Griff500!

Thanks alot for all the useful information. As for the deepnes of my pockets-they are getting shallower every day (hollidays comming up), and it seems to have somthing to do with a non compromise atitude regarding the rebuild. But it is all about priority, right?

I understand there is an enormous amount of knowledge here....beyond my experience. Therefor I have another guestion: Brakes!! any cheap conversions available, or does anyone know of vented discs and 4 pot calipers that will fit with macining and spacers.
For instanse discs and calipers from BMW 320 have been used on the opel ascona for budget rallying.

I checked wilwood and brembo prices and that is too expensive...at least here in Norway.

Check out Adrian Venn - I know he does a 4-pot conversion. Also there is a rumour that wedge shaped Austin Princess fronts fit. Anybody tried it?

If you're rebuilding the engine you will probably want to go for unleaded heads, so that might be the time for bigger valves as well - beware if you're doing this with a high lift cam as the pistons may beed machining.

My engine was rebuilt from seized scrap by a bloke at Apsley Transmissions in Hemel. Apears to have done an excellent job - we'll see when the cars running

If you awnt trple webers - you can get them off scrap MG Metros and Montegos - need two pairs. The problem is the inlet manifold - beware bargains - mine is an old flo-tech manifold and the early ones had qulity problems which mean they have to be TIG welded up (Cores moved during casting)
