Some of the most awesome footage I have ever seen of race boats surfing (with a killer chinese in there for good measure!)

I was lucky enough to deliver Tokio W60 acoss the North Atlantic in Jan 2000, we had her up to 28 knots with only Main and Jib. The responsiveness of the helm of even on a boat of her era was amazing.

Have a look at this Figaro 2, a few wipeouts!

Great videos, especially scary in the dark!

Going for the smaller boats, check out my old class, the International Moth:

Always fancied a ride on a fast yacht. More used to smaller stuff (Moths + Cherubs) which is plenty good fun.

There is nothing that beats the feeling of riding a fast boat in a big breeze. During the 1993 Fastnet race, we touched almost 18Kts on the way back from the rock in a 38 footer in the middle of the night. Absolutely awesome sailing in 35 / 40 kts of breeze that lasted for 12 - 18 hours before it started to die as we came near Plymouth.

You have to trust your fellow crew members 110% when things start getting quick though!

What's the tide got to do with it - 48 kts is 48 kts - unless you are talking about SOG rather than actual boat speed through the water?

Anyway these guys are doing 47+ kts under sail! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_w3k5PuJOA - Now that's a rush!!

It is mad isnt it.
- I would love to do somthing like that.
- Although unfortunatly i get massive motion sickness issues, so that might come into it!

But ive had the RS200 our with my and my (fairly light) cousin in some pritty strong winds out round the estary mouth at salcombe.
- When your reaching back and forth with the spinny up, up on the plain, just hammering a long! Great stuff!!!

I guess if it is wind over tide in a breeze, 48 kts would be pretty wet......

Never done any sailing in a big boat, biggest was a 29 footer and not of race spec. Would loved to have had a go on a race boat though, bet the exhilaration is awesome. In my youth I got dunked enough as it was in an Enterprise dingy so was never brave enough to even try a Cat or Tri, regret that now.

Not even sure if I could remember how to sail as it has been circa 20 years since I set foot on board. Must rectify that soon, New Years Resolution I think!

Offshore racing is a combination of sleep deprivation, intense cold, watersoaked clothes, sickness and moments of terror. Luv it biggrinbiggrin

Where in the UK are you - might be able to recommend a sailing club.
