Completely done to death only a couple of days ago - http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
If I recall correctly, the conclusion of every right thinking individual was "Get a 360 and Forza 2".

both are great and if you search here you will find lots about both consoles.
I have both and enjoy both( well when I get my 360back from being fixed again)
up to you, 360 had more games and good racing games. PS3 costs more but if you got a 1080P HDTV and watch movies blueray is amazing too. and the PS3 has some good games out and more coming soon

Have a good search on google and see what games are coming out for both over the next 12 months. You say its for your wife too so take into consideration what she would like to play, one of the main reasons I went for ps3 was that it has a lot of games coming out for it (eventualy) that appeal to both of us, Resistance, gt5, warhawk, for me and Home, Little big planet and Ratchet and clank for her, amongst others.
Although if your mad about motorsports its hard to ignore Forza for the 360.

Has anyone mentioned that the 360 is half the price of the PS3?
Get a 360, Guitar Hero2 and Forza2.
My better half is hooked on GH2. It has a guitar for a controller.
Forza is THE BEST GAME EVAH etc but i'm unsure of its longevity. PGR3 and Test Drive Unlimited are also worth a look.
The Mrs may like a Wii tho.

i have an xbox 360 and i would say that it is your best bet as there are a lot more games, and plenty of racing games, forza 2 and project gotham being the biggest. Although you probably get more power with a PS3 the games library is not very large, however two games worth a look at are Gran Turismo 5 and Formula 1. Also if your interested in online gaming, Xbox live is without a doubt the best.

If you want a like for like set up, the 360 costs the same as a PS3, if not a bit more IIRC ??Combo players at competitive prices should be out by Christmas anyway.
The 360 has a much, much larger selection of games due to it having been on the market for longer, and a larger userbase for the same reason. On the downside, if you play online you have to pay for it and even Microsoft have admitted that the console has production quality issues, approximately a third of all machines develope at fault in the first year of use.
The PS3 has a poor selection of games at present but that will change as software developers get used to the new arcitecture of the machine the games coming out will be bigger and graphically superior to the 360. It's expensive compared to the 360 but does come with built in WiFi, a bigger harddrive, HDMI output, BluRay support (which should win out over HD-DVD due to the backing of most major audio/visual brands) and if you can wait for the large number of new releases coming out this September then I think you would be wise to go for the PS3.
Every console owner has an opinion on which is best, just consider what sort of games appeal to you, see what each machine has to offer both at present and in the near future.

we have decided to go for a bespoke PC - gaming, multimedia fileserver, iTunes, internet etc etc instead of a dedicated games machine - reasons . . .
we are not serial gamers - just occassional ones
xBOX/PS3 ect - would be overkill for us
more cables - more boxes - more power - another BOX in the living room just makes a load of mess
I am going to build it - speccing it as we speak!
Will post the results when complete - thanks for all your help so far!
