I know someone who dropped a Calibra Turbo engine into a Nexia I think its fairly easy - made it a real sleeper - you could imagine peoples faces as they get wasted by one of these things.

Its just a mk2 Astra aint it? So surely all the go-faster bits that fit Astra's would fit...

Holden Kadett actually. Very little in common with the Astra.

What were the bigger ones based on, the pointy ones? Looked a bit like an XM? I never worked it out.

The Espero was based on the GM World car 2000 platform, that's the 1982 Opel Ascona/Vauxhall Cavalier, but with an extra 9 inches in the wheelbase. The body style was designed in 1990 by Guigario, around the same time as they also did the Xantia, IIRC it was a Citroen reject style, hence the similarity with Citroen.

The 1st Daewoos were made in 1966, they were Opel Kadetts (HA Vivas) in knock down kit form. GM had a controlling stake in Daewoo up until 1992, which is why the stuff that came to the UK in 1995 was based on GM stuff, but Southern hemisphere Holden product, not European product. When all the 'new' Daewoos came out in 1997 (Lanos, Nubira, Leganza) the styling was all new, although mechanically they were still GM derived. Daewoo also made cars based on Suzukis, Hondas and Mercedes, as well as many more. They also built cars for other manufactureres too. Daewoo went tits up in 97/98, along with the whole South Korean economy. GM finally bailed them out again in 2002, deciding to rename them as Chevrolet in some markets, which is now GM's budget car brand globally.

My favourite Daewoo is the Chairman 500, which is actually the previous model Mercedes 500 S class. It is not a copy, it is a Mercedes, built under licence by Ssangyong, when Daewoo was in control. Ssangyong is independant of Daewoo again now though.

Thanks BG, interesting stuff. Logged in the Library under 'D' for Daewoo!

I actually thought that Daewoo in terms of cars had only existed since the Nexia/Nubira etc, when they sprouted in the UK.

Have a look at the current Daewoo Statesman, which is a 5.7 litre V8 Holden Monaro 4 door. And the G2X sportscar which is the Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice.
