We had one here, but didn't fall for it.
We complained to the DPR and apparently the wording of the information sent out was changed, but it's still misleading if you don't read it properly.

Sorry to hear that.

Did you know CCTV comes under the Data Protection Act !
Quite a few businesses local to me have CCTV and yet have no idea about the Data Protection Act !

I quote:
" ...The same legally enforceable information handling standards as have previously applied to those processing personal data on computer now cover CCTV..."

from
www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/publicationpages/DP/data_controllers/cctv_codes_of_practice.pdf

CCTv should not capture 'passers-by' , i.e. persons not visting your place of business.
So cameras may not point on to the main public road.

Hope this helps some of you.

Please get some professional advice before proceeding.
I am no expert !

I received an 'official' looking letter saying I had to register with Data Protection etc blah, blah, blah but it didn't look quite genuine - filed it with the 'European telephone Directory' (Liectenstein) and the 'Give us yr bank details - we'll deposit millions in yr account' (Nigeria) scam letters that I receive regularly, but it did look fairly good though and certainly had an air of genuineness about it, Beware.

I received a 'business opportunity' doing this about 6 months- 1yr ago.
Business opp was to try and get people to register - cold calling businesses.
Shame i can't remember more about it.

We have received that Data Protection scam thing - the stupid thing is that as a company we are DPA experts and actually help many companies and organisations comply with the law.... but I guess they didnt know or care about that, and just sent out the scam anyway....

Cheers,

Paul

Of if it is inevitable that your CCTV points at 'people' (thought that was the point) then you have to provide a visual reminder of their rights - this means the usual disclaimer:

'You are entering an area protected with CCTV, please phone xxx for more information.'

You have access to the information (images) stored on the CCTV system and you should be able to call the phone number and request to see the images.... its all part of the DPA. Its a bit bizzare but is there to protect us all - though there is a chap going round the City and causing fuss with all of the companies that have CCTV - getting them to show him on tape - he is thought to be a bit loopy, but you cant kick him out as he can call the police and get you done.... strange? You aint seen the start of it yet....

Cheers,

Paul
