New Number Plate?!

I need to replace my rear number plate and have tried calling a few places, no-one will make a road legal plate as the dimensions are different

As you all know, the rear plate is around 7mm shorter in length

Looks like my only option is to buy a standard plate and cut it down which I didn't want to do as I would mess it up!

Any ideas or places to recommend?

"road legal" refers to the dimensions around the letters, not to the size of the plate itself. For a normal 7-character registration, the "standard" size of plate doesn't fit, as you say.

I only have a 6-character registration, but shops like Halfords still wouldn't cut down the "standard" plate. Eventually I found a wee shop who agreed to make a shorter one - all they did was score both edges about 5mm in and snap the ends off (like how you cut glass) and then file off the edge and round off the corners.

They will pre-cut them to the required size. You can also get them with the TVR logo on them as above.

There are loads of plate makers on e bay for very reasonable money who will make you whatever you want at whatever size - they get away with this and not needing V5 docs etc by selling them as "show plates"

I've used a few different ones without any problems at all.

Thanks, I found a place on the web called A1 Plates http://www.a1-plates.co.uk/, I called them and they have agreed to cut to size (513mm vs standard 520mm)

They are not charging me any more than the standard price either...result!

Damn, this thread started a couple of days too late for me - I just ordered a set of plates when I got back from SCH last weekend!

I ordered the standard size plates from craigsplates.com, knowing I'd have to trim the rear plate to fit...

I used a Stanley knife against a steel rule to get a nice straight edge without damaging the finish. If you're doing this, put something under the rule to protect the surface of the plate. It took about 6 or 7 passes with a fresh blade to cut through the acrylic. I then rounded the edges with a file and finished off with some wet 'n dry paper. You need to take off about 5-6mm in total, or use your old plate as a template.

If your plate has a border printed on it, you probably need to order the right size plate to begin with or it won't be symmetrical.

Just received my plate from A1 Plates who trimmed it down at no extra cost

Fitted and looks great!
