360 modena engine: will it fit?
Discussion
Good day.
I currently have a ferrari f360 modena v8 with all ancillaries. A mate of mine works for a certain insurance company to find customers for salvage. I picked it up cheap just because of what it is.
Then I had a small low frequency brain wave (doesnt happen too often) and thought what about making my ultima into an ultimarrari (sounds like some sort of squid).
Only problem is, how much work will need to be done to fit it? Will it fit?
Also if anyone is interested, I can get my mitts on the following:
Jaguar XJ220 parts
Mclaren SLR PARTS
Porsche 911 (any)
numerous other models.
My friend sold all these cars but due to the flooding of the yards where they were being kept, they are now cat B and can only be sold for parts. They are going pretty cheap to clear the yard - massive cleanup operation in progress.
Cheers

Usually, salvage companies will only deal with motor trade companies not public/private sales. I am fortunate enough to have previously worked with a couple of guys who are now in charge of salvage sales.
i see. i ask because ive always fancied running my own breakers yard, what would define a motor dealer to them?Rich, it would be a complete "one-off". You would have to be, or enlist, a reasonable fabricator for motor mounts and transaxle alignment and mounting. Otherwise, it may work just fine. There are guys that have put all manner of lumps in their Ultima.
If you can find the basic overall dimensions for a Chevy small-block and for the Porsche transaxle, you should be able to compare those to the items in your garage. Would you attempt to use a Ferrari transaxle, too?

If it physically fits, you'd also need the trans otherwise mating the engine to a Porsche box would be another expensive exercise. The next big issue would have to be the engine management, I'd guess that making it run on the Ferrari one as stand alone would be a challenge and you'd have to go after market, Motec etc.
If you had an F1 box to go with it that would be cool.... but then you'd have further programming issues.
It would be a cool project that would really wind some tossers up ... but an expensive one.

Nizpro in Melbourne did a twin turbo 355, got some truly ridiculous power and torque graphs out of it. The guy that owns it has a top fuel door slammer (drag car) to drive on the weekend. I have also heard of a guy putting a 360 into the back of an MX5 mazda, stretching the frame and other crazy stuff.
There is also someone on GT40s.com putting a fezza v8 engine and gearbox into something.

I've got an F1 box plus ive got the paddleshift etc to go with it. I dont know whether I could do it myself, but it would be using the engine with the ferrari f1 box and not a porsche box.
Clive, would you be able to help me on this issue, possibly the issue of modification and installation? Or do you know anyone who might?
Also, I can get hold of an F430 V8 with all ancillaries, gearbox etc for however much is bid. You'd be best off going to see it in the flesh first, but ill get some pictures up anyway.
Muchos Gracias

You would have to be an employer or employee of the motor trade, such as a garage owner, mechanic, mechanical engineer, salesperson, underwriter, etc.
They mainly want a company name that they can put on their records, as if a cat B part is bought from them to put in a different vehicle, and that part went wrong and was responsible for an accident and possible death, then the salvage company who supplied the part could be liable due to wrong/ false classification.
I can probably put you onto someone if you like.

I just Googled "Ferrari Engine Swap"... and look what came up!... Kinda makes the "will it fit in an Ultima" and easy proposition!

"So you like the Nissan Sunny (Sentra), but you think it lacks power, even the Gti-R. At the same time, you’ve got access to a wrecked F355. That’s right, put your hands together. And stick that big ole V-8 and rear transaxle where your hatchback’s rear seat and trunk used to be."

Now youve got my attention, if you have the box as well and the electronics then it may well be worthwhile.... in fact it would make a great car when it was finished IMO as the engine is exactly what you want in an Ultima, high revs and plenty of sound... you could then also downsize the wheels and tyres and make the car lighter.Clive, would you be able to help me on this issue, possibly the issue of modification and installation? GO the whole hog though and chuck in the 430 engine.
Doubt Clive will be much help as he's just emigrated and now lives on the streets in Canada.
We certainly know someone who may be able to help you with the installation/build.

AndyGTT if you know somebody who might be able to help, i would be very interested. We would have to work out what work needs to be carried out, modifications etc and obviously a price for the work.
I could exchange the 360 modena engine for the F430, but have to make sure the 430 engine still has the trans.(They go a fair bit cheaper than you would imagine!)
Also i have the flappy paddle steering wheel etc, this could be installed in the ultima could it not?
If you could possibly make a list of the components necessary from the 360/430, then i'll make sure i've got them.
Also looking at using 6 ferrari 430 rear LED lights because they look beautiful. Have a spare 360 tubi exhaust system too.

lol... I'd bet that a 430 engined Ultima would be a match for a 550bhp AS engined one
and if the ferrari engine and trans can be got and installed for less than £12k it would be cheaper to.
I really love the idea, and would be interested to know how much these are... I know NF used to use ferrari V12's in their P4 replica that used a similar chasis.

You can buy used 360 engines from places such as www.eurospares.co.uk
They also sell lamborghini murcielago and gallardo engines, plus any other parts you like from the car.
However eurospares is very expensive. The cheapest 360 engine from them costs around 8 times as much as I got mine, and mine came with all the bits, eurospares come seperately.
I can get hold of a wide range of engines from prestigious cars such as lambo, ferrari, porsche, mercedes (there is a flood damaged slr at the mo going for parts) so if anyone needs any help, i can point you in the right direction.
