I'm due to go from Newcastle to Ullapool on the West Coast of Scotland soon. I'm planning on taking the A82 and want to avoid Edinburgh & Glasgow.

Can anyone offer any advice on the least congested route around those two cities?.

Also, once I'm 'north' and in open country, will I encounter many scameras and unmarked plodsters?, are there many mobile scameras?. I'm not planning on racing or being silly, but I just want to enjoy the roads and don't want the points... what roads should I 'take it easy on'?

Newcastle to Glasgow - A1 or A68 is a scamera frenzy. M74 is usually ok but occasional scamera vans on bridges.

Glasgow to Fort William - By Loch Lomond is busy! occasional unmarked cars, driven it 1000's of times and never been pulled but worth being wary. After Loch Lomond the run between Crianlarich and Tyndrum is a favoured scamera van hotspot (3 points received by myself there) Tyndrum via Bridge of Orchy and Rannoch Moor has some big straights, good chance to overtake the endless queue of caravans. Keep a watchful eye for scameras still.

Glencoe - just look at the scenery, its always crammed with idiots/caravans/idiots/tourists/oldies/idiots. Take the road round Kinlochleven, (turn right just after Glencoe village) bloody amazing sweeping curves.

Ft William to invergarry
Usually busy and crap, just sit it out until you turn left at Invergarry. Normally you will get stuck behind a numpty at this point. The road has double white line most of the way up the glen so overtaking is impossible for several miles and can be very frustrating. Keep calm the best bit is about to come.

The descent down to the A87 is usually clear, once on the A87 towards Skye (sensational road) its pretty much game on. Never heard of police or scamera being sighted from then on.

Turn right after Eileen Donan castle onto the tourist/coast route, much of it is single track but dont be intimidated by it. If you are feeling brave take a detour via Applecross.

Best roads in the UK are in that area, some very very fast bits. Hardly ever see another car never mind the Police. Scenery is distractingly beautiful and roads are just mind boggling. The best road in the world follows Ullapool.

Ullapool to Durness is the best road I have ever driven. 1 in 5 slope downhill into to tight curve followed by 1/4 uphiill over crest into tight curve etc and repeat for 50 miles. Just awesome. Do it.

Have fun smile

Watch for unmarked cars on the road between Cairnlairch and Glencoe, when we did the Toon Hoon III a few months back one of the guys got pulled by a Silver Skoda Octavia, there is also a Black/Blue BMW (5 Series I think it was) patrolling the same stretch but we clocked him before he clocked us.

Have fun.

I know the area around Skye pretty well but no so familiar with Ullapool.

Here's a good site for info http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usmapindexes...

Great driving roads round there though!!! And beautiful scenery (providing there's not low cloud)
