windscreen replacement?
Discussion
Hi,
I'm just in the process of buying my first Noble (woohoo), and it unfortunately has a larg-ish chip in the windscreen.
You can't really see it from outside the car, or while driving, but its quite obvious from the passenger seat.
The dealer are having someone come look at it before I pick the car up, but I was fairly convinced they should replace the whole windscreen.
However they're basically saying no, and that it would cost £600-£700 to replace!
So, am I being unreasonable in assuming that it should be replaced (2002 GTO, 2.5l, £26k)? and if I was to get it done later myself is a new windscreen really £600!?!
Any help appreciated for this new-and-very-excited-but-trying-not-to-be-frustrated pending Noble owner...
thanks
Shane

If the dealer is unwilling to make good the windscreen on a "sale" then be very wary of their operating practices and future support (if any!). IMHO they should NOT sell you the car with a damaged windscreen (eg: a "technical" MOT failure). However, if they have already factored the replacement cost into the deal then so be it BUT, as everyone's insurance policy covers replacement glass for £50, why don't they (the dealer) have the repair done in their insurance first?! Ask them!
As AMG Merc states, this would be an MOT failure and correct me if I'm wrong but whilst an MOT may only be required to be re-issued every twelve months, isn't it only valid when it's issued? That being the case, the dealer are selling you a car without a 'valid' MOT and therefore un-roadworthy, un-taxable and un-insurable.
I'd have another word in their shell-like, ask them to resolve or you’ll cast aspersions on their integrity and walk away.

Its only an MOT failure if its within the vision area as defined or otherwise significant Mine has a small chip on the windscreen but its passed the mot as its outside the critical area and its a chip not crack.I'd have another word in their shell-like, ask them to resolve or you’ll cast aspersions on their integrity and walk away.
Can it be fixed rather than replaced. had a cip on the Range Rover after 2 day old and had it fixed can't even see where it was now

Hi, thanks! Well the dealer is Mole Valley, who seem to have quite a good reputation...
Their argument is that its a 5yr old car for not much money (relatively speaking..) and it should be expected to have marks.
The one previous owner when crack happened 2 yrs ago apparently wasn't bothered about having it fixed (?). Mole Valley have also serviced/looked after the car since new with this one person as well.
Their point of view is that they won't shift on replacement or price unless it fails the MOT it's having tomorrow morning. Although to be fair they are having someone come check that it is watertight+safe anyway.
I do see their point of view (if its not an MOT failure, which they'd fix anyway). But I'm still not sure I'm happy. But what worries me is selling the car in the future...
Decisions decisions, do I walk away...lose the money I've already put down on it - or buy it anyway and take the risk (or hope I get another chip in it and use my insurance to replace it!)

oooh lots of replies, I love you guys!
It is having an MOT tomorrow - and they have agreed that if it fails the MOT because of the chip then they will replace the windscreen. Just not otherwise.
Seems fair then. Don't forget the insurance route if its a small chip - only £50 and no claims loss either. It is having an MOT tomorrow - and they have agreed that if it fails the MOT because of the chip then they will replace the windscreen. Just not otherwise.
yup - its the yellow one, wouldn't have been my first choice of colour but somehow i'm loving it already...
on the test drive got a flash and thumbs up from a random TT driver, not used to that...
not sure how correct/up-to-date it is, but here quotes £623 for a new windscreen: http://www.strikeengine.com/noble-buying-guide.htm... - don't know if that might help anyone else after one too

Is a screen actually available?
Yes, they still make them and they're usually in stock these days. However, with the agreement of Noble we have commissioned the production of a batch of electrically heated front screens using the original Pilkington tooling. These screens will carry the Noble logo and be available in about eight weeks.

Yes, they still make them and they're usually in stock these days. There was a problem some years ago with availability of the M12/M400 screens which were sourced from South Africa, often arriving broken in the UK. The screens are now manufactured in the UK by Pilkington (Triplex) on Noble's own tooling. We supply Hinckley with screens from stock held on their behalf but as part of the agreement do not supply the standard screens direct to owners.

Sounds a nice idea but I wouldn't have thought many people would go for it. Most people have the car in a garage so no issue of frosted screens and extra heat inside the car is defo not needed.

And that's significant for the driver, not the passenger.
