Admiration sir. Great shots, especially the brake lights and heat haze on the Audi. Did you though, like me, run for cover when the heavens opened? I was rather too worried about the electronics and was proved right - several snappers here this weekend told me they lost cameras during Le Mans. Here's a couple I took taken from the inside of Indianapolis. My dawn photos on the Mulsanne roundabout need a lot of photoshopping for some reason.

What lens were you using Dave? 300mm f2.8? Where I was, with one exception, I was too close to use one and so used the 70/200 f2.8 with and without the 1.4TC. Dawn is not an easy photo time but here's one at Mulsanne about 6.45am but sorry for the slight out of focus. Probably my eyes at that time but it shows that the drivers lose concentration too!

dearest tony,
400 2.8 .... both with & without the 1.4 telecon ... far better shooting than with the non IS 600.
it's taken a year or so to begin to get decent results with it, but gettin' there now.
i struggled to be more adventurous around the circuit this year (the lazy bastards on the campsite made me do all the washing, cookin' and cleaning) but you should have no excuses given reccy opportunities !
aug 11th date is now cancelled on the bugatti circuit, but may be at Magny Cours on sept 1.

I appreciate we didn't get to meet, but it was very nice of you to wave from the other side of Mulsanne. I think this is a very flattering photo of you too.......... Good to see the diet worked too.

Sept 1st is Goodwood Revival and then on to Watkins Glen for their equivalent of the Revival (probably all vastly over restored with lousy racing but we'll see). I find the 400mm way beyond my pocket at the moment what with a FIA papered C type perhaps in the offing but I might either buy the Sigma 120/300 (great reports from friends) or the 200/400 Nikkor while in the USA (£2,600 there as opposed to £3,800 here) Any experience or knowledge of either?

Top class pics there Dave, just a couple of points tho......couldn't you have got any closer in the Audi pits? Also, where's these pics of the Vette parade lap? I'd hope to see he gripping the wheel like a madman cutting up a black C4 under Dunlop by now!!

Can I assume that your TT pics are just as supreme?

what a shame .... i'll miss you (like f***ing chicken pox !)

hi phil ... nice to have a pleasant "conversation" with someone sensible for a change ... don't think i caught you in the parade, but i did leave a message for you with your mates in the 'vette compound.

probably the better ones from TT:

both are crap .... buy CANON.

i buy all of my gear from a guy called "Kerso" ... no point in searching to find anyone cheaper, as there's no-one tighter than me (ex yorkshire) ... he now lives 'twixt scotland and the US, and obviously imports and sells over here .... and a very nice chap too.
details available on request.

All joking apart, your photos are absolutely fantastic. That lens of yours is razor sharp and the action just leaps out of the photo at you. I did think of going Canon when I changed to digital - honestly - but for some reason the Nikon felt better in my hand and just seemed to fit. Perhaps I made a mistake but then if every photo was a winner we wouldn't keep trying to improve, would we? I'm happy with the D2X but I must, having seen your photos, improve the lens quality. Details of kerso would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ahh, I remember this little excursion well (stood just out of shot to the left somewhere). Driver makes a complete misses his breaking point, locks up and ploughs straight on in to the gravel trap at Mulsanne... then 30 minutes later is telling RLM how there was oil on the track. Interesting how none of the cars around him found that oil...
