Anyone know if its possible to put a personal reg plate on hold? I mean to not transfer it to another vehicle. I've searched all over the dvla and found lots downloadable forms but none seem to do what I need ?

Rob,

Yes, you can put it on a retainer. The Mrs has just done it with her reg. I'll find out the full details and post it.

The reg is already on the mrs car but she's selling it and wants to keep the reg on hold.

You pay about £105 I think and it stays on a retention certificate for up to 12 months and can be put on any vehicle at any time in that 12 months for nothing

You transfer it to a retention document which is valid for 12 months. It's called a 'Certificate of Entitlement' and is form V750. If it runs out you lose the reg but you can extend it for a further 12 months if you apply in the 28 days before it runs out. The extension costs £25 (or did in August).

One thing to watch Rob, and it's vital.
If you get a buyer for your wife's car don't part with it until you get the replacement Registration Document (V5) from the DVLA (they will also issue a replacement Tax Disc, and an amended MOT if applicable, but the V5 is often posted about a week later).

It will bear a bog standard number with the appropriate year letter. You then fit plates on the car with the new number, and can sell it.

You lose the right to your wife's number if you sell her car before you get the replacement V5 !!

I nearly lost my wife's number this way last year, so have a look at the site below. Scroll right down to the foot of the page, and read the bit headed 'How to Apply to Retain a Registration Number'.

Rob,

Seems like jamer, jsg and Mcnab have summed it up to a T.

Why is it that its the 'Mrs' in all the aforementioned cases!!! - Oh, probably cos there no decent TVR reg's left unless you've got a new style reg. I want to become very good friends with the owner of V8 TVR (for my next purchase), I think V8 AJP is still availble (for all those Cerbie owners)!!
