chipping an IS200
Discussion
Unless turbo charged, dont waste your money.
Ahem, i used to work for a company that sold/installed/ and tuned customers cars with these "chips".
Most unimpressed.
I didnt see many giving a gain of anything.
The figures and the blurb, "Gives 25bhp" blah blah blah, that means that at 2500rpm you might get 1 bhp, then at 3000 you might get another 1 bhp etc etc, and thats where the 25 bhp comes from...over the rev range.
its an added up figure, not 25 bhp extra at say 4500rpm...bit of a swizz? and best avoided.
Thats for naturally aspirated motors anyway.
Turbo cars are a bit different.
The chips tend to remove the factory boost limits and in some cases the rev limits too..can be bad.
The boost raising is usually done with the aid of a "bleed valve" otherwise known as a calibrated bleed.
This is where the "BIG" increases you hear so much about, come from.
Nothing really fancy or clever about this.
Bleed valves cost about a fiver to make, but will cost about 25 to you and me, and so it goes on....
Do i sound bitter? twisted? cynical even? Thats cos i am! Ive worked in that industry for a while so i know some of what goes on.
Unless its turboed, tell your friend to save his dollars, its not worth the "extra" power(sniggers) that theyll sell you.
Hope this helps.
