My Ultima GTR is scheduled to ship sometime in the next 8 weeks or so. I am planning on going the LS7, GT2 combination. It is my understanding that I need to rebuild the rear transaxle mount. Would anyone have any pictures, diagrams or other related information about installing a GT2 transaxle in an Ultima GTR. Also does anyone know if someone is building the mount and has it for sale?

I could also you some guidance with the shifter and cables.

Any advice anyone has would be great.

Thanks,

Randy

Is the GT2 the same as a G50-xx? I don't know. I have a G50-52 that I would like to find a quality cable shifter for. Does anyone know of one that is already available?

No, IIRC the GT2 box is a G96... which is a newer design... someone here will have a link to a ratio's page, they're a strong box, but perhaps there isn't a big choice of after market ratios yet

or

can help you with the G50/52, which is a strong box, and CMS has a custom sequential changer designed for it...

THe GT box's use very similar internals to the G50 big diff boxs and thus there are loads of ratios available also helps that these boxs are used in the porsche race cars.... it would also use the same adapter plate as the G50.

I can also recomend GD as they already have a complete package for the GT to SBC and LS motors from adapter to clutch and starter.... although you will probably have to get a rear frame made up to hang the gearbox but that is not difficult at all.

As for gear lever, I have the porsche mechanism which is expensive but recently I have got a billet unit to use instead which is far stronger and I think it would be cheaper... you have to get special long cables from the factory (or a cable specialist.

BTW I was looking at the new mechanism I have and I think it wouldn't be that hard to use it to convert a rod shift G50 to cable using it....

Andy- Can you please post some pics of the Porsche shifter you're referring to? Also, do you have it in you car and is it on the street or are you builiding it?
Thanks,
Paul

Its going in the car I am now building as I had a 4 speeder in my Canam.

The gearchanger fits into the Porsche housing and replaces the porsche parts, however I am thinking of incorporating the mounting points into my chasis to remove the porsche housing completely.

They couldn't help me with with my rear frame for LS7/G50-05...and actually wasn't that impressed with the attitude of the guy on the other end who seemed insulted that I should be asking for just the bracket!..must just have been a bad day!

I've made a temporary "positioning" bracket on mine..to be replaced before it hits the road. I spoke to the factory, who will have one available at some point now that the LS7 is supported. Someone like Jeff Schwartz (earlier post) could also supply one and maybe a whole engine package too!

Thanks, for all the responses. For some reason, in the past, I thought I had seen pictures of an LS7/GT2 combination on this form. I will do some searching to see what I can find. I have been in contact with Jeff Schwartz already. I will ask him about the rear transaxle mount. I will also give Gardner Douglas a call to see if the can help. At worst case, I will need to build the mount my self.

Thanks

You will need to rebuild the mount.

In order to fit the LS engine into the Ultima chassis, you need to get adaptor plates for the engine. There are two types of engine mounts - you need to get the correct ones. Search my old posts and you will find what I did, and also references to part numbers required.

Using these adaptor plates and SB engine mounts, the LS engine sits 25mm further forward than the SB. You cant move it further back (using custom adaptor plates) or the AC will clash with the chassis.

... so your engine+trans sits 25mm further forward (but with loads of clearance at the front)... the driveshafts are on a slight angle forward.

The trans mount however needs to be refabricated. Its is quite simple. Fit the engine+trans into the chassis, bolt the engine in, put a jack under the trans and jack it so its in the middle of the chassis rails (vertically), and use ropes to hold it in the middle of the chassis rails (horizontally)

Then tack weld up your new mount with everything in place... take it off to finish weld.

Thank you all for the information. I found what I was looking for. Another Ultima owner "Peter" sent my the picture. I attached Peter's picture.

Thanks
