M18, M1, A42/M42/M5/M50 /A40 questions
Discussion
Travelling back up from South Wales this morning with nothing interesting on the radio a number of motoring/related questions entered my head:
What is that strong smell of TCP that always lingers between junctions 30 and 31 of the M1?
Why do they put the hazard gantry signs on for the closed slip at the A52/M1 junction when it has been like that for weeks and is hardly a hazard, more information. Just causes people to slow unnecessarily. Ditto warnings about delays between junction 30 and 32 northbound into the roadworks, signposted from around junction 24, but no problems and an 'incident' around junction 27 when there was nothing. Do they not know where the 'off' button is?
What is the thinking behind the prohibition on LGVs in the offide lane of the A42/M42 northbound, just north of Birmingham? I like it but it must annony the Yorkies no end.
Why have all the service areas on the A40 from Ross to Monmouth shut? North and Southbond on the A40 Ross Spur and the ones at A40 Whitchurch are fully or partialy closed and derelict. They used to be thriving and now the A465 Heads to The valleys road is nearing completion won't they be needed more?
What is that derelict house on the hill to the right when driving northbound around M1 junction 30?
Why don't the highways agency staff who do their shopping in uniform at Morrisons at junction 1 of the M18 do it in their own time and not the time I am paying for, and when they could be telling the gantry operators that there is no queue at junction 30-32 on the M1 as claimed.
Why do they try and trick you into using the M6 toll road?
Why did every half asleep pensioner in their R reg Rovers and Nissans use the A40 this morning in some sort of co-ordinated 20 mile rolling block on anyone wanting to drive at a speed approaching the speed limit?
What is the exact conversion rate of litres to gallons? I can't work out my MPG, and I think the fuel computer is lying to me.
How does the 'active traffic managemnet' on the M42 work? Is it average speed detection, static cameras judging speed at a point on the road or just someone trying to get into the Guiness Book of World Records for the largest gantries?
Note to self; get some CD's for the car.

As the A42 (and the end of the M42) are only two lane you get large queues building up in the outside lane caused by HGVs overtaking - the faster one can get up to perhaps 58MPH,whilst the slower one can do 56. What is the thinking behind the prohibition on LGVs in the offide lane of the A42/M42 northbound, just north of Birmingham? I like it but it must annony the Yorkies no end.
This idea is to try and prevent it.
The reason that this scheme is needed is due to the UK government crass kowtowing to Brussels in fitting speed limiters to HGVs and their total incompetance in forward planning in not realising that we have very few East/West high speed links and that such links should be at least 3 lane from the outset (There rant over, and i'm not a yorky.)
Compare the problem now with the speed of traffic just after the opening of this stretch of road. From experience i can assure you that the difference is incredible.

Just south of J30 there used to be a company called "Coalite" who used to make products from coal by "distilling" it.The company closed down a couple of years ago and they are dismantling the place. There must be lots of "nasty stuff" being released from this work so maybe it's that? (I think it used to smell like that when the place was working so....)Leftie said:

Bolsover Castle is partially derelict and is on the right when heading North.
On the left as you're heading North just by there is Sutton Scarsdale Hall - just a shell.

1 gallon is 4.546 litres.
And, to quote from my vehicle handbook (it honestly says this!):NOTE: As fuel consumption improves the litres per 100 kilometres figure goes down but the miles per gallon figure increases. This apparent anomaly is because the fewer litres used per 100 kilometres the better, conversely the more miles per gallon the better.
