So with the usual extra 50 bhp gains with better exhaust thats 480bhp stock.... not bad if its still in the $7-8K range......

It'll be California Smog Legal otherwise they wouldnt be able to sell it in the states.... which means it will also pass EURO4

This is a very interesting development as I am looking at a track only vehicle and feel this to be cheap reliable and above all QUITE power. Obviously LS7 is the buz at the moment but as my new project will weigh less than a ton, LS3 is looking good, and more so if it comes in at a throw away price

All LS engines are, I think of the "L" meaning "loo min um" as the yanks would say

LS1 is alloy in the monaro

they do need a shed load of oil though to fill

Not quite. LQ series is the iron version of the LS - known as truck engines (4x4's and Vans to us brits)

Well it was amusing if it wasn't totally accurate

Suppose the series started out all aluminium and has had iron variants added for various reasons (the recent iron LSX block being an alternative to the C5R for boosted strip applications?)

I'm not certain about this but I think the iron stuff was probably first 4.8/5.3 as the truck division heavily subsidises the alloy stuff. They sell huge numbers of iron block stuff.
