Thinking of purchasing a secondhand GTR

Hi All

I am thinking of starting to look for a nice secondhand gtr, I have drawn myself a shortlist of requirements

1 500+bhp
2 ap brakes?? are hi spec brakes any good??
3 air con
4 centre shift, ideally 6 speed
5 good build quality
6 rear spoiler

I would greatly appreciate any views. What to look for in a secondhand GTR?? If any of you know of any good GTR's for sale, I have a rough budjet of 40k.

I have built 2 kit cars previously and have a good mechanical knowledge but will struggle to find the time to build myself (kids and work commitments) Is there any meetings i can attend to build my knowledge. Sorry for all the questions but i have always wanted a Ultima since i saw Mr Marlow racing at Mallory in the kit car series in 1991!!

If you have any GAY tendencies, you could always cosider a Canam ( check thread under heading of gtr v Canam ) and I know of one not a million miles from you, up for sale

Is there any particular reason for specifying 6 speed and centre shift?

As a preemptive answer.
You do not need 6 speed. Any Ultima is going to have torque aplenty and 4 speed would work just fine. 5 would be the norm.

Centre shift would mean A Getrag box which is both more expensive and restricted on ratio choice with no chance to change. A G50 box can be fitted with centre shift but it can be a pain as the rods need to share the same space as the engine sump. If it is getting used to the shift in the wrong place believe me you very soon get used to it and it adds to the character of the vehicle.

are ap brakes the best? hi spec any good?

AP's have the edge I would say ( they bloody well ought to for the price of the damn things! ), having said that I do know at least one person that did not think much of them bur I am sure that was only because he was used to servo assistance and was not happy with the feel as much as anything. I don't think the HiSpec are no good, but they are not AP if you know what I mean.

If you are asking about HiSpec because you have seen a car advertised with them then don't be put off because they are not AP. Someone may need to correct me but I believe HiSpec were a factory fit at one time.

Bottom line is that the Granada brakes with servo will still do the job as the car is so light but they look so sad and out of place in the 18" wheels.
