Exhaust olives

The exhaust suddenly started rattling on tick over on my S3 so having gone all round the system looking for the cause I have found that the exhaust pipe to manifold pipe connection on the left hand side is loose (would have expected more exhaust noise). I was going to get a new clamp while I was at it and redo the joint with exhaust paste however having read the bible it mentions olives being fitted with no photo to explain. Are they really necessary or will the paste do ? Has anyone reassembled the exhaust without ??

I had my exhaust apart a couple of years ago and I don't recall there being any olives.

In my experience, olives are only used where you have 2 flanges joining the pipe or where one end is flared - neither of which occur on my S3. If it is a straight 'slide-over' fit (one tube slides-over the other), as mine is, just use standard clamps to compress the outer tube at the section where the 2 compression cuts are. Hope that helps!
