Very amused to read James May's column in Saturday's Telegraph bemoaning the nonsense about corroded disks and warranty cover (or rather the lack thereof). www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=/motoring/2007/05/19/mrmay19.xml

Maybe having someone "high profile" point out how ridiculous it is might do some good...

Alternatively, perhaps someone should tell him to take to an Indy - probably to be told the disks are just fine...

The OPC are not doing a very good PR job grumpy

Corroded discs are not a warranty item, and it is covered in the owners manual. But,

1. Porsche should do more to pre-warn owners on how to avoid it.
2. If the mileage is low they will just need skimming.

Honest John has never been a Pork fan and so loves the chance for a little "knock".

Had this prob. with my BoxsterS. After a little resistance all discs etc. were replaced under warranty. I think two things helped. 1) A brilliant OPC (Exeter) 2) My car was being featured in EVO's Longtermers section................... Mr May needs to apply more pressure!

To be honest Porsche are MUGS trying to pull this stunt on May.

I am the biggest OPC advocate here, and even I am prepared to admit that they tried to leg me over with brakes.

At the 84k service I got the "new discs, they're knackered, safety issue" b0llocks. I inspected them, got a second opinion (from an F3000 race mechanic I know) and he said they were fine.

At the 96k service a year later, the same OPC serviced the car with the same discs on. Not even a mention this time.

"Honest John?

"Porsche started to lose its hard-earned reputation when it began water-cooling its engines (from the 1996 Boxster and 1997 911/996)"

He obviously wasn't paying attention to the 914/6, 924, 944, 968, 928.... and that's ignoring the racing cars.

James May makes an entirely reasonable comment when he says his Fiat Panda and 1979 Bentley don't seem to suffer from this nonsense. Of course brake disks wear out - but to claim they do so through lack of use seems fatuous at least. How is it that OPCs get away with this stance? And of course, we all know they play on the "better safe than sorry" approach with brakes.

I really hope James makes more of this...

Per my previous post, Porsche's first reaction was to say I wasn't using the car enough - 10,000 pa.?! Then they said I was putting it in the garage staight after driving on wet roads. REALLY? what did they expect me to do - get under the car with a hairdryer and dry the discs off after each journey in the rain!! As others have said cheaper/'lesser' cars don't suffer this problem so nor should a £40k+ Porsche. I'd be amazed if May doesn't get them to sort it, as I did. If you're out there reading this ping. me an e.mail mate.

He meant the model with the flat six engine. He rates the 993 highly.

I see a marketing opportunity for Porsche here...

They have already convinced some people that they need a battery conditioner to keep their battery in tip top condition if the car is to be unused for long periods.

Now they just need to develop some "brake disk conditioners" - I can imagine a set of 4 mini "carcoons" with the Porsche logo on them that clip on to each wheel arch , built-in de-humidifiers and little fans filling the wheel wells with dry air!
