Idle at 2,700

Hi there,

I recently had my S3 on a rolling road for some idle improvement where adjustments were made to the ECU. All was great but after a week it has now decided not to idle any lower than 2,700 revs.

Does anyone know why and if there is an easy fix?

2,700 rpm idle is rather fast

I'm guessing you have tried the obvious things first off?
i.e Throttle' fully free moving from 0-100%
All sensors connected still...

check the carpet hasn't got stuck under the throttle ,happened to me once

Thanks all for your advice.

- It's not the carpet a a sticking pedal
- I played with the throttle cable with the bonnet up and the engine running, but that seemed fine too

I assume that it must be something electrical then, which scares me as I have no idea how to resolve it... other than drive it back to Austec (50 miles). I am concerned it will overhead if the traffic is slow, which it probably is...

Any more ideas?

Oh dear, oh dear, try unplugging the throttle pot, it's nearly always the source of the problem. Tie the wiring back out of the way, I have run mine for >18 months like this without detriment to performance. At £50 a time from Ford and having had several fail too quickly I am quite happy to be potless.

PS There is a very good search system on Pistonheads which might help you get a basic fix on your problem.

.. I don't agree toatlly with the Cerbie 4.2 TP change..... whilst the car runs ok with it, I found hesitancy as at low revs under accelleration, and the engine did not seem as lively when hooning around. IIRC myself and Kentish had may a posting on this topic about 2 - 3 yrs ago

Tonight I unplugged the connector to the Idle Speed Control Valve. The revs dropped back to 800! It is even smooth to drive at low speeds, which it wasn't very good at before.

Based on a 15 minute test drive, I think this "fix" should be ok for now. I am taking the poor beast abroad for a few days and it will be without this valve connected.

Hopefully all will go well - I'll let you know!

Have you tried cleaning the valve? it may just be sticking,Its not a hard job and if it works you have no worries,if not you haven't lost anything.
