Hi chaps and chapesses,

I wondered if I might get some advice on a potential 996tt purchase.

I have placed a deposit in a lovely looking late 2002 black 996tt with black interior, FPSH, 41k miles, ali pack, BOSE upgrade, 5 owners which is up for about £42k.

I have had a full 110 point inspection done on it at a Porsche dealer and it does need some TLC to get in to perfect condition.

Needs new discs and pads all round.
Its due a big service.
Rattle from the front passenger side suspension - fault as yet undetermined
Had an oil leak from the base of the engine / gearbox which may or may not have been fixed by replacing a couple of oil seals - needs to be driven for c.1000 miles to find out.
Needs both turbo heat shields replacing as they are corroded.
Front bumper has a golf ball sized area of damage to the paint lacquer.
Needs new front tyres since the ones on there (which are new) are not rated correctly for the car.
A few other niggles (a bulb here and there etc)

Otherwise its perfect!

On the whole it feels like a sound car and is very tidy. It certainly drives very well and the price is good. However I just thought I'd ask you guys if you thought the car sounds like a good deal. The £42k goes a long way towards making up for the things that need fixing but since I am new to Porsche I figured it would not hurt to get some advice from folks who know what they are talking about - and even those that don't!!

Cheers,
OllyD

It sounds cheap to be fair but it doesnt exactly sound well looked after either cosmetically or mechanically and looks a little like its been run on a low budget..i always question the way a car like that has been driven when the owner appears to have very little pride in owning it..all imo of course.

Persnally, I would keep looking.

Bought an 02 manual myself in Jan (immaculate, 1 owner, 19k miles). Paid 46k and then another 4k to the OPC -big service, rear discs/pads, leaky rad and warranty. So, with the list of niggles which you describe, I would guess that you would have to budget quite a bit on top of the purchase price to get it up to warranty standard. You might be better off putting that towards a slightly more expensive (lower miles/less owners?) car which already has the warranty. I would definitely recommend the OPC warranty as mine has already paid for 2 more rads which started leaking after the 111 point inspection.

Good luck, whatever you do and if you get one I don't think you'll regret it.

I guess it depends on the cost of putting things right, if you use OPC menu pricing then the main service and brake pads/discs all round is going to cost £2k+ alone. I cant comment on the other issues as i dont know enough about the cars but the going Private/Independant rate does seem to be £45k at the moment for a 2001/02 TT with under 40k miles.

If you dont mind silver? Low Mileage and under warranty.

its sounds like a dog.

5 owners in 5 years, less than 41k and its in a poor condition. I would walk away from it.

Sounds like a problem car, hence the number of owners and lack of miles. It doesnt sound looked after.

Run away now.

There are loads of good ones out there. Bide your time.

This one sounds like it's been run into the ground, by people who didn't care.

A recipe for heartbreak.

It's not unusual to have that many owners mine had 4, sure it changed owners name within a company a couple of times and most that buy new Porsche can afford to be trading them in after a year or so, the amount is not unusual. The car itself does however sound like it's not been looked after to well and i'm more than positive you will find better out there, bottom line is if a part needs replaced on my car or fixed, I do it regardless of cost.

No Reading.

It's a lovely car. No nav (who cares?!) but look at the options that matter. Carbon wheel (££££!) and carbon pack, yellow seat belts, BOSE, HCS....

I am very tempted to buy it. Very tempted!! IN fact, if Porsche Reading are reading this then if you give me a decent trade in I will buy it.

Olly, keep looking, there are loads out there.

Needs new discs and pads all round = about £2k
Its due a big service = Major I presume? About £1200 (plus anything else they find)
Rattle from the front passenger side suspension - fault as yet undetermined - Could be a drop link (about £120 to fix) or something much much more serious.
Had an oil leak from the base of the engine / gearbox which may or may not have been fixed by replacing a couple of oil seals - needs to be driven for c.1000 miles to find out - Assume it's not fixed - could cost you £££££££
Needs both turbo heat shields replacing as they are corroded - Not that expensive & very common "fault"
Front bumper has a golf ball sized area of damage to the paint lacquer - Not too expensive I guess if its just the lacquer.
Needs new front tyres since the ones on there (which are new) are not rated correctly for the car.
A few other niggles (a bulb here and there etc) - New fronts - £250 ish?

Otherwise its perfect! - Sorry to say it doesn't sound it. There is over £3,500 worth of stuff there to fix - thats not taking into account it being a major suspension problem or a major engine problem causing the leak.

There is so much choice out there that I would only settle for a near perfect one myself.

Time to call Henry and see if he'll offer me 25 squid. Actually had a pretty good offer from Joel at RSJ who does seem to be quite reasonable. Just have to square yellow with the wife (Had got her used to the idea of a green one, how much more difficult could yellow be...really)

Not your yellow one, I meant the car the OP saw in Scotland (I rang the guy but it sounded like it needed £5k+ spent) looks more like £7k from that report.
