The PCM unit in my wifes Cayenne has failed, the screen has gone white and is apparently not uncommon. Despite the car being 2.5 years old and being covered by an extended Porsche warranty, the warranty excludes electrical components. Porsche would chage £1300 for a new unit including fitting.

I'll check how much Northway would charge as their labour costs are lower but I can't find a second hand PCM unit anywhere. Does anyone know whether I can buy a reconditioned PCM unit or have the existing one fixed?

Thanks,

Phil

Not much help to you, but I believe the ones Porsche supply are reconditioned (certainly the case with the 911) though I did think they were around £1k rather than £1300, but i may be mistaken

There is something wrong here is there not? A 2.5 yr old warrantied car (OK out of factory 2 yr period, but even so), has an option costing >£2k go wrong and it'll cost nearly £1.3k to fix - and its not uncommon, and dealer is not interested. This is a bit of scandal isn't it? Is this the Porsche GB view?

yep... that's the Porsche GB view. Admittedly my Reading OPC has put in for an act of goodwill paymet but I'm not expecting them to pay out. What's more frustrating is that I've bought 4 Porsches in the past 4 years and am just about to buy a 997S.

Bout time Porsche got its act together and put at least a 3yr / 60k mileage FACTORY warranty if not unlimited mileage one

Lets face it if my memory serves me right NO other VOLUME manafactorer let alone one with ideas of being one of the worlds best offers such a short warranty.

What are they afraid of? Their profits can certainly stand it!

they dont do it cos they dont have to.

their cars still sell and people would still buy them regardless of warranty

its not the most profitable car company in the world for nothing

Does the warranty even include labour for this so you are being billed for the parts? Or are you looking at paying for the whole lot????

I assume that ECUs, ABS, PASM etc. would be covered under the extended warranty as they are related to making the car go "mechanically" if you see what I mean???

What about sunroofs etc.? Is there an internet copy of the get out clauses in the "much lauded" £895 warranty?

Granted, they give what they can get away with, but the words 'Bombproof' and 'Porsche' no longer sit very happily together.

Comes to something when a 1993 964 911 C4 (admitally only 51k miles) goes through the workshop with a far cleaner bill of health than a 3yr old sub 30k miles 996

Great driving cars yes, well engineered cars maybe, reliable cars? merely average

Once upon a time, you gave a long warranty not because you needed to or it was expected, but it was a sign of your belief in your product something it would appear Porsche do not.

Dont get me wrong, I do think they are great cars and they dominate the market place particulary with the 911 as nothing else quite blends all of its qualities together... ie Jag XK, Maserati GT, Aston V8, BMW 6 series. None of them to everything quite as well so the 911 is the default purchase.

I sold a Y reg Carrera 4 coupe last summer (1 owner, only 14,000 miles), putting an OPC warranty on it for the customer. They sucessfully claimed for repairs to/replacement of the PSM (1) system when there were problems with it a few months later. I would suggest therefore that it may depend on the OPC, or maybe the rules have changed?

I had the PCM unit replaced under warranty in 2004 when the tray for the SIM card broke. I didn't even have the phone module fitted! They replaced the whole unit under warranty without any question. I'm sure if you persist they will allow the claim.

It is dissappointing to say the least that these expensive parts are not covered. Keep on at them to sort it without backing yourself into a corner.
