Hi all,

Background:

Getting the trackday bug - want the girlfriend to catch it too. Wanna keep the Ultima, but get something else that can be used by her everyday, and then tracked alongside the Ultima.

We both love the 964 shape, wide best. Have a mate in the States who is dying for me to get a car out there and let him play with it (AXIS Motorsport) to give it a track slant.

Can you give me any steer on what would make a good donor.

Cheers
Lucky

Carrera 2 coupe is the one to start with. If you are going to make it into a road/track car I wouldn't bother entertaining a targa or a 4WD model IMO.

C2 Coupe Manual

although did see a C4 being converted to a C2 at Ninemeister, so a possibility if you can find a C4 cheaper.

Thank chaps,

My man is steering me towards either a 30th anniversary widebody or a turbo.

Either of those?

Hmmm...c2look and andymin, nice motors. 'specially nice @rses in your garage andy.

Interested to know what you Porsche people feel about:

1) N/A v Turbo

2) 2 v 4

for track use.

I would suggest 'tinkering' with either of those is likely to devalue them in preparing them for track use. Certainly both useable on track but they're value's might be seen to be appreciating over the coming years.

Those models are going to cost in excess of a regular C2 which is going to be more of a car that you will 'care less about' if something breaks and won't really devalue it with any mods you fancy doing.

The two models you mention are best left standard, unless they are cars with a bit of history where future worth is not an issue.

But whatever you choose to buy, it will cetainly be fun thumbup

You have a nice stable of previously owned there Peter and also a very nice U.

2wd is the better car for track use, the 4 suffering from more weight and understeer. I think the N/A in 964 guise will be better suited to track use, as the on/off power delivery of the turbo will prove a right handfull to get the most out of. Get a well sorted set up on a 2, some good tyres and will be as much fun as a lot faster cars on paper.

You only need to experience the thrill of an RS to know what I mean.

Just in my opinion though.

Thank you C2. Good thoughts to mull over.......thumbup

Lou, my lady, has held on to several tank slapers in the Ultima (that's 550, no traction or ABS) so I would love her to get hooked on a P 2wd over a 4. Just coming outta a Masser 3200, I know how unsuited that sort of Turbo is for track, is a 964 the same (turbo, not handling).

BTW - just to point out. My previous isn't all owned, it was helped along the way with a P1 membership.

Lucky.

Turbo's not a problem as even with the 3.3 turbo 2's it does take to many mods to make them spool up at 3000rpm. On the circuit you would never be below 3000rpm coming out of the corners so there is no sudden suprise.
Food for thought. A 2wd will defo be better than 4wd. the 964 4wd tended to be a bit understeery, you've got the extra weight of the system as well. Traction in the 964 2wd is not a problem as long as you have a zf diff. I would tend to go C2RS if you can afford as they have all the right suspension bits standard and the ZF. The standard C2 trailing arms have a lot of rubber that causes a lot of flex. The RS's do not. (plus I think adjustable anti roll bars, certainly on the club sports).
Even stripped out the turbo will be heavier, shell engine and gearbox alone is a lot heavier than C2. But I do love their fat arses. Remember the faster you want to go the more it is going to cost, it really is as simple as that. More power, speed and weight (turbo) will load the tyres and the brakes a lot more as you will be carrying more speed approaching the corners.
Depending on budget best bet go 964 C2 with some RS bits added or buy an ex UK Porsche Cup car, there are a few around.

..... great minds think alike. I am currently searching for a 964 myself. I used to have a C4 with a chip, RS flywheel, BB tuned length headers, turbo brakes and 18" BBS rims. It went like a rocket. This time I am looking for an RS, but will settle for a C2 if I cant find a decent RS.

No.

Only the Anniversary model in non turbo wide body AFAIK. It was 4WD based on the C4 but didn't benefit from the Turbo suspension and brakes as the supersport variant did of the earlier 3.2 carrera.

I once had a C4 set up with RS suspension and took it in the rain to the Croix circuit in Northern France....ran rings around Fezza 360's, M3's, C2's and a couple of genuine RS's!!! Had all the work done by Jonas @ JZM...was great fun on track...

Anyone here imported a US car before?

1) How much was the shipping?
2) What % is import tax?
3) What were the items that had to be changed prior to SVA testing. Lamp etc.
4) Any potential pitfalls?

Looking for a US black on black 964 C4 WTL under 50k miles.

Cheers

if i was (when im) building a trackslag start as light weight as possible and go from there. c2 and strip every ounce out. then handling+power. the track running costs escalate massively with weight and power... (5days in the gt2 cost more than a whole season in the rs)

Hi Melv,

Great job on your car..I've been watching your posts from a distance (in a non-stalkerery type of way paperbag)

Between us, my G/F and I have come down on the C4 WTL as it is probably better for a couple of P-car newbies on what will end up as 99% road use, year round.

I'm toying with the idea of a slightly harder version for a weekend toy - but it ain't launched yet - and there'll be a queue!!

C2, Manual, Coupe, normally aspirated - as a 911 should be.
