Can anybody tell me if the early 996 turbos suffer from the same intermediate shaft engine problems as the rest of the early 996 range?

fortunately they don't as all 996 turbo engines are based on the old 3.6

I'm no expert in these matters, but from what I understand the TT and GT3 is a different engine block (GT1 related) than the Carreras and not blessed with the same problems.

I'm sure the more knowledgable will be around soon.

Well the revision was sold from september 2001, but as a 2002 model year. The 2002 had better interior fit and finish, and a glovebox. Also there was another revision in 2003 where the sat nav was upgraded...

2002 onwards had better interior trim, glovebox, self dimming rear mirror, rain sensitive wipers all as standard. Plus Bose as standard (I think, not 100% sure on this)

Glasses guide holds the 2002 onwards cars at a premium to the pre 2002 and while not a massive change (ie no engine, styling changes) the 2002 are a little more sought after.

I always think this pre 2002/post 2002 distinction is ridiculous...my 2001 tt had as good interior build quality as any 996 variant i have owned or driven,glovebox?self-dimming mirror?,rain sensitive wipers?,and bose?..all totally unimportant when buying an awesome sports car car for just over £40k.The beauty of buying an early tt is that the car is identical barring a few cosmetics from a late model at nearly twice the price! To not buy a mint low mileage 01 car and buy a tatty 03 car with a glovebox makes no sense to me.When i was selling mine the first question i got asked 'was has it got a glovebox?'to which i felt like saying 'who gives a ? its a 500bhp Porsche and i dont wear gloves when i drive it'.All imho of course.paperbag

Yes 996TT do suffer from intermediate shaft problems. The Turbo, GT2 & GT3 use the GT1 block which is different from the regular 996's and the problem is a lot rarer than in the 3.4 & 3.6 996 Carreras. But it does exist, I have a friend with a 2002 996TT X50 with intermediate shaft problems right now and he is looking to replace the whole motor. The car only has 16k miles on it too.

16k miles 2002?? Dohhhh!! Would it get fixed under warranty as if i take the TT plunge then i have factored the £895 a year warranty costs to my budget.

Tend to agree, all the stuff above is just "stuff", nice to have but hardly essential. However people like the latest spec on cars, always have always will.

If you had a warranty I'm pretty sure it's all covered, my mate's car is out of warranty and so he's looking at $19k for a new engine & $5600 core exchange for the old engine, so warranty is worth every penny.

That car with the intermediate shaft problem must be 1 in a handfull of problem 996 turbo engines...that is very rare to have that go on a 996TT.
