A slightly different thread on a topic that's probably been here before, but......

Have new car arriving at OPC in a couple of months, and managed to get reasonable p/ex deal confused

But a mate has been hankering after my car for a couple of years, so offered to sell to him, at same money. I've owned the car from new, 996C2 bought March '02, now has 78K miles, and my mate accepts that sold without any warranty; whilst I don't anticipate anything major to fail, would hate for him to suffer huge bills in first few months / weeks / days...

Having read various bits on the 111 point check and OPC warranty, I was going to suggest he considers this option. The 996 has FSH at local OPC, but original warranty has never been renewed, so will they still consider a new warranty in this way? Presumably after the 111 point check?

Also can the 111 point check and warranty be undertaken through any OPC? As don't want to have check done locally, find car's a 'bag of nails' and the local OPC looks to renege on their deal !

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi

If there is anything other than a few days since old warranty expired I think you will need a 111 point inspection, (unless you know the OPC VERY well (?))

I just dont think there is any point NOT running a 996 without a warranty!

I did exactly this, bought my 996 from a friend buying a 997 from OPC and I did buy the warranty.

Having your friend buy a warranty, at least for the first year, is not a bad idea. Call it friendship insurance or whatever, but if the something major breaks in 3 months time it will be hard for him not to be somewhat resentful ,even though he's buying it 10k cheaper than from OPC

Bearing in mind my friend had the car serviced to schedule at OPC and never said no to a service item, I paid a reasonable chunk to have the following done at an indie:

to pass 111 point check
- replaced RMS
- replaced Horn

other
- replaced rear toe arms
- replaced one quarter window seal
- had geometry done
- replaced front discs and pads (3k miles after buying it)

Thanks guys for thoughts,

I'd be happier if he bought a warranty, saves any future aggro. The warranty is about £900, but what's the costs of the 111 point check?

Depends where you go ... Colchester charged me 1 hour labour = £110+VAT. I think someone said Cambridge were the same price.

Think I'll give him the basic costss, and recommend he considers it (thoroughly) then leave it up to him.

He knows the car has been well looked after, and an extra 1100 quid will give him the peace of mind, and considerable saving from a dealer's sticker price.

If it's not long till a service is due you could suggest he has this done as it's possible to get the OPC to do the 111 point check for free, even with a minor service. Better to spend £317 (or whatever the menu price is now) on a minor service with a free check than £210+VAT on a check alone. The service department have sales targets and £1200 from one 2 hour job is good for their figures.
