Tuesday I was at the Ring...a Speed Yellow 997 GT3 Club Sport was lapping the track rather quick and the sound under acceleration was very impressing...loud, sharp, screaming...really a superb sound!!! It was very near to the sound of a racecar.

Then there were several 996 GT3's and 996 RS's, but they didn't have such an impressive noise...they were near, but it was less loud and not so screaming...

The 997 GT3 was the only one at the track so I couldn't compare to others...does the 997 GT3 really sounds that different from its predecessor or would this guy have fitted an aftermarket exhaust?

Had the pleasure of a few laps in my 996RS at the Ring last Thursday evening followed by a couple driving a borrowed 997 GT3CS.

Although I wouldn't swap my 996 for the the newer car, the sound the 997 makes is truly glorious. It has a wonderful bark to the mid range acceleration.

Yep, the 997 car has the twin central tail pipes quite close to a cup car. The 996 has a quieter system. It is easily changed but the 997 does have noise issues at many UK circuits an where the 996 was border line pass for quiet days, the 997 is often a border line fail. does sound nice though..

thanks for the info...so the newer GT3 indeed has the better sound!! Great, I thought it was an aftermarket system but it turns out not to be.

Yep I think Porsche took on board peoples comments about the exhaust note. Shame its too noisy for most quiet trackdays though - it's the reason a lot of us 996 owners haven't gome aftermarket.

Anyone know what the noise levels of the 997 GT3 are then? I have a day booked at Castle coomb in June with my new GT3 which I get the end of this month.

cheers

You could be ok at Combe Guy. I dont think they have any drive by meters at the moment so just the static test to pass.

98db but they usually only ask you to rev to 4000 rpm

Combe is usually a static 4,500rpm, at which the 997 GT3 comes out at 99.5db.

IMO it gives noisier static readings because both exhausts exit together under the engine.

Guy,
You should be OK on both quite and noisy days. I had my 997RS noise tested there the week before last and for quite days (4500 revs) it was 99.8db and for noisy days (6300 revs) it was 104.7db. On the basis of these results I took it to the most recent PCGB track day last Saturday and just scraped through at 100db ('twas a quite day). There was another 997RS there as well with exactly the same noise reading. Problems are not usually during static noise test - its the 'drive-by' at
Bedford, Goodwood and Donington where we'll get caught out. I'm looking at getting some brackets made up to support a couple of 'free-flow' silencer cans to use at these circuits.

Thanks for the responses very encouraging. I will be interested to hear how you free flow silencers work out. All I need to to now is get the car and run it in!
