Body off at last

Well I've done it at last. The body is off and I can see the chassis in all its glory now - it looked solid when viewed from underneath!! Just goes to show you dont know unless you lift the body.

That is an excellent piece of work - the website is very clear and informative, a very useful step-by-step reference for anybody thinking about lifting the body off.

Before you start welding check out the side seatbelt mounts on the outrigger. I suspect there may be a hole or two there. Personally I'd replace the whole length of side outriggers although you do have to fabricate the seatbelt mount and get the nut in the right place.

One thing to note: The rear tub/seatbelt mounts (3rd pic in chassis page) are different lengths on each side - well they were on my S3. I fabricated the offside one then when I did the nearside one I realised that the platform bit was different. This led to lots of checking the tub, measuring old bits and trying to work out what I'd done wrong before I was happy that it was made that way.

Good luck - you've a few months work there. I've just fired up may car after after the chassis rebuild and can't wait to finish it off and get out there.

Nice shed .Are you stripping car down completely?.Just in process of putting mine back together,lot of work on chassis & trailing arms,managed to do do all rewelding myself.Allmost ready for body remount.Soon be back on the road have realy missed the car. Look forward to more snaps of yours.

Really good effort with the site, and of course the body off lift. I like the idea of a staged removal with jacking and packing. Keep us posted with progress.

Good luck with the rebiuld - it is worth the effort.

Taxed mine last week and had a quick blast down the road today and it feels so much more solid. The body shake and rattling (especially on my dirt track driveway) has vastly improved and it feels more confidence inspiring. Seems strange that I feel more confident in something that I put together but the quality of work from garages does occasionally scare me.
