I have always admired the looks of the Ferrari 328 GTS as one of the great cars of the 1980s but have never had the opportunity to get a drive in one. I currently enjoy a TVR Chimaera but feel that I have had my fun with that and need something to tinker about with. (Yes, my Chimaera has been boringly reliable!! - but I am not complaining!). I am considering going for a 'classic' car (A minor restoration project?) and wonder if anyone out there can share their ownership experience of a 328 - e.g. cost of running, reliability, build quality, quirks etc etc. Can anyone oblige please?

Same boring old story I'm afraid. It all depends on how much you're prepared to spend. 328s are not good restoration projects !

Parts are expensive and the car is complex. Build quality quite good and ditto reliability. Nothing to fear if you can find one with a good history.

Take a look at http:/users.skynet.be/sky38711/allfiles/garfiles/fer3028.htm

If you send me an e-mail I will reply with more info.

Hi there
I too have a reliable chimaera. Buying a F355 spider seemed like a good idea. Don,t get me wrong I LOVE the Ferrari but this does not make me blind to it's shortcomings. I got it with a two year warranty.....good job...they have shelled out in excess of £5000 in the last six months. A lot of that figure was labour but the parts bring tears to the eyes. By the way, that figure did not include the £1500 that I had to pay for a new exhaust manifold because the old one had cracked(standard F355 fault sir!). Now I know you are talking about an older Ferrari but the parts will still be expensive and they will all be nearer the end of their service lives. I'm not saying don't buy one, just go into it with your eyes open...and preferably a warranty of some kind. I shudder when I think how close I came to buying a privately advertised F355 without warranty.

Thanks chaps - I need to hear the downsides to put me off doing it! Its a bit like the Best Man standing behind the groom saying "Don't do it!!". Seriously though, thank you for your contributions. I had butterflies in the stomach when I shelled out on the Trev - but the only costs involved in keeping it on the road has been the servicing and tyres - fairly predictable costs all in all.
