Anyone any idea why, approximately a minute after locking my 993 with the keyfob thingy, the alarm lights start flashing - no alarm sound though. They then go off after a while (not sure if it keeps repeating) and then when I unlock it they flash about 6 times instead of once. No doors are open etc. D'you reckon it's a fault or I am missing something?

Could be one of many things - possible issues:

Is it an aftermarket alarm? - May not have been installed correctly - 993's can be strange like that.

Could also be a wiring issue caused by an aftermarket audio system

Most likely cause - The dreaded water in in the cabin - Bad earth. This can cause no end of electrical gremlins, as the alarm control units are very often under the passenger seat next to the ECU. Lift your carpets, front and back, and look for signs of water ingress. Under the carpets you'll find sound deadening material about 3/4 inch thick which is glued to the floorpan with some of the most disgusting glue you've ever seen. Try to get your fingers under the material and feel for moisture - it should be obvious if there's any there.

If it is, remove the lot, and check the usual things - sunroof drains, seals around the glass.

Hope this helps - no doubt somebody with more knowledge will chime in eventually

6 flashes denotes a triggering of the ignition circuit. Never seen the problem myself though.

mine does this too, exactly as you describe.

as there are no other symptoms - and after a bit of bemused manual reading - i came to believe it was simply part of the locking/alarm/immobiliser procedure.

i'll probably get my specialist to look into it when the car goes in for a service in a couple of weeks.

The fact that your indicators are flashing seems to suggest that the alarm has been triggered but is muted. You can mute the alarm with the samll key that you shoud have. This goes into the alarm module accessable in the engine bay on the left. If you turn this, the alarm should sound.
The cause could be down to an audio installation (yes, there's a trigger point in case the head unit is stolen) or the glove box not latching properly.
Let us know how you get on.

At least I'm not the only one then! Maybe a previous owner muted the alarm cos it happened so often and just decided to live with the flashing lights. Strangely enough, it doesn't seem to do it if I set the alarm before the immobiliser kicks in. So just need to get out fast!
