M490 - HiFi Option code on a 996

After much googling I must admit failure,

I have a 3.4l Y reg C2 convertible and was wondering exactly what this sound option entails.

It seems to be an amp in the front boot space with either 4 or 6 ouputs, and speakers in the rear, rear doors and front. But I can't find the exact technical specs of the kit ...

I have this option it is the upgraded sound system before Bose on pre facelift cars. A small amp with some extra speakers.

Interesting ... I seem to have this option too - a small amp in the boot, next to a sony MD changer. The query I had was also, what is the tech spec of this device and when I come to upgrade the head unit, whether I should keep the amp (if it is compatible) or replace it ? Any ideas ?

I think if you upgrade the head unit you can keep the amp BUT they have to wire it slightly differently (makes sense really). If you're going to upgrade the head unit yourself, maybe do a bit more research as I remember a thread mentioning exactly what to do. If not, just make sure the place doing it knows you have the M490 option.
